Human condition

It is, in short, a process that is essentially economic and political, but technically informed. And because the process relates to the human condition, or to the well being of other parts of the environment, it is inevitably ethics-rich.

The challenges and opportunities in the field of energy are critical for a world in which inexpensive, readily available fossil fuels will eventually be exhausted. Unless we learn how to generate and store energy, not just burn up the fuels formed in earlier times, we will be unable to continue to advance the human condition or even maintain it at its current level. Recreating the potentially injurious conditions with an animal permits detailed examination of specific target tissues as well as observation on other systems and portions of the body. Unfortunately, large numbers of animals must be treated and maintained to obtain statistically significant results, and direct translation to the human condition is, at best, uncertain. 

In the case of immunoglobulin, microarray data indicated the opposite effect that the Fc-receptor is elevated in chronic MS but not in acute lesions. Using Fcy-receptor knockout mice, the disease was found to be absent. Inter-venous immrmoglobulin therapy in the EAE mouse model was reported (see Lock, 2002, Reference 29). In summary. Lock et al. were able to apply the results of microarray-based gene expression clustering of a human disease pathological state (acute vs. chronic MS) to successfully identify fherapeutic targets for an animal model (EAE) potentially applicable to the human condition.

Because animal tests can be carefully controlled with the doses known exactly, the quality of the data is generally good. The number of animals used should be enough to allow statistical significance to be demonstrated. Humane conditions and proper treatment of animals are essential for scientific as well as ethical reasons, as this helps to ensure that the data is reliable and robust.
