The ideas in this chapter owe much to the work of Hannah Arendt, in particular her book The Human Condition (Arendt, 1958).1 Arendt emphasized the publicness of the world it is always to some extent public in the sense of being shared by more than one person. The things of the world are not like private thoughts and feelings rather they appear to and can be experienced by multiple people, from a plurality of perspectives.
