How to Use This Publication

Like applying for a library card, it is a good idea to gain access to an Internet facility or site, particularly if you don t have a computer or Internet access at home. Again, many public libraries and institutions will allow you to use the Internet and computers at no extra cost. This is also usually the case with imiver-sity libraries, especially if you explain that you are researching a topic and would like to use their Internet search engines for academic reasons. Later in the book, there will be a chapter on how to use the Internet and which sites provide what kind of information. For the moment, however, it is a good idea to find a... [Pg.31]

There are many methods of analyzing variability and uncertainty and many ways of presenting the results. Inappropriate use of these methods leads to misleading results, and experts differ on what is appropriate. Disagreement about which methods are appropriate will result in wasted resources, conflict over findings, and reduced credibility with decision makers and the public. T here is, therefore, a need to reach a consensus on how to choose and use appropriate methods, and to present this in the form of guidance for prospective users. Written in a clear and concise style, the book examines how to use probabilistic methods within a risk-based decision paradigm. [Pg.197]

III.b.1.9. Public education about medicines. Without sufficient knowledge about the risks and benefits of using medicines and when and how to use them, people will often not get the expected clinical outcomes and may suffer adverse effects. This is true for prescribed medicines, as well as medicines used without the advice of health professionals. Governments have a responsibility to ensure both the quality of medicines and the quality of the information about medicines available to consumers. This will require ... [Pg.89]

Probably the first major publication of a process model for the autoclave curing process is one by Springer and Loos [14]. Their model is still the basis, in structure if not in detail, for many autoclave cure models. There is little information about results obtained by the use of this model only instructions on how to use it for trial and error cure cycle development. Lee [16], however, used a very similar model, modified to run on a personal computer, to do a parametric study on variables affecting the autoclave cure. A cure model developed by Pursley was used by Kays in parametric studies for thick graphite epoxy laminates [18]. Quantitative data on the reduction in cure cycle time obtained by Kays was not available, but he did achieve about a 25 percent reduction in cycle time for thick laminates based on historical experience. A model developed by Dave et al. [17] was used to do parametric studies and develop general rules for the prevention of voids in composites. Although the value of this sort of information is difficult to assess, especially without production trials, there is a potential impact on rejection rates. [Pg.455]

Legislation introduced in 2008 proposes to use this new standard. The Comparative Effectiveness Research Act of 2008 would create an institute to review and publicize evidence on how to best treat diseases, disorders, and other health conditions. In evaluating the effectiveness of drugs and medical procedures, the institute would provide unbiased information to health care practitioners. Information on the most effective treatment rather than the most heavily advertised and expensive treatment would ideally reduce costs. The pharmaceutical industry also favors the legislation. A version of this legislation passed as part of the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009. The act provided funds to several agencies and created a Federal Coordinating Council for Comparative Effectiveness Research to advance comparative effectiveness research. [Pg.29]

When including supporting information, place a statement to that effect at the end of the paper, using the format specified in the author instructions for the specific journal. House organs and trade publications constitute a large and important body of useful information not duplicated in other sources. Although their primary objective is to sell products or enhance a company s prestige, they successfully communicate the latest technical infonnation on uses, physical properties, specifications, and physiological data (2). The chief problems in this area are how to get this literature and what to do with it once obtained. This paper has provided answers to these two questions. No list of trade publications has been compiled, as it is impossible to make a selection in accord with the interests of more than one company. [Pg.134]

Burson-Marsteller and Hill Knowlton, leaders in the public relations (PR) industry, are impacting the public s perception of pesticide risk, and they are premier in knowing how to use media. Perhaps the American Chemical Society should use this public relations expertise just as Union Carbide and Dow have, but I do not think such reliance on these giants of PR is the only or even the best solution. Uncovered PR-generated articles are neither journalists nor the public s favorites such stories do little for long term creditility. [Pg.160]

The best way to learn how to use an extinguisher is to practice in a fire class with a firefighter. Many fire departments give free hands-on training to the public and educational institutions. Don t pass up this opportunity to handle an extinguisher. The instructions below are appropriate to read but there is no substitute for hands-on training. [Pg.85]
