Horizontal and vertical

In the future, it is expected to be possible to make more routine use of additional wave types, specifically shear or S waves (polarised to horizontal and vertical components) which have a transverse mode of propagation, and are sensitive to a different set of rock properties than P waves. The potential then exists for increasing the number of independent attributes measured in reflection surveys and increasing the resolution of the subsurface image. [Pg.23]

In case of some samples besides the cross sectional CT-slice also a projectional image is of interest. In these cases the test mode Digital Radiography (DR) is applied. In the DR-mode the object is not turned, but scanned horizontally and vertically. Again the very high dynamic of the detector and the mechanical accuracy of the complete system are of large benefit to the image quality. [Pg.586]

The burner is mounted on an adjustable stage that allows the entire burner assembly to move horizontally and vertically. Horizontal adjustment is necessary to ensure that the flame is aligned with the instrument s optical path. Vertical adjustments are needed to adjust the height within the flame from which absorbance is... [Pg.413]

Along the x axis, both sin 0y and sin 0 equal unity. The light consists of equal amounts of horizontally and vertically polarized components, that is, it is unpolarized, and has twice the intensity observed in the perpendicular directions. [Pg.674]

These are plotted in Fig. 10.6, which shows the net intensity envelope in the xy plane as a solid line and represents the horizontally and vertically polarized contributions to the resultant by the broken lines. Since 0 is symmetrical with respect to the x axis, the three-dimensional scattering pattern is generated by rotating the solid contour around the x axis. [Pg.674]

We call a plate the shallow shell when k =k2 = 0. This implies that the plate mid-surface coincides with the plane z = 0, and the plate is limited by the two parallel planes z = h, z = —h and a boundary contour. Let us redenote the horizontal and vertical displacements of the plate mid-surface by u = ui, u = U2, w. In this case, the plate horizontal and vertical displacements are not coupled. Indeed, it follows from (1.18), (1.19), that U = (ui,U2) is described by the following equilibrium equations ... [Pg.8]

We formulate boundary conditions in the two-dimensional theory of plates and shells. Denote by u = U,w), U = ui,U2), horizontal and vertical displacements at the boundary T of the mid-surface fl c R. Then the horizontal displacements U may satisfy the Dirichlet-type conditions... [Pg.17]

Denote hy W = (w, w ), w horizontal and vertical displacements of the mid-surface points, respectively, and write down the formulae for strain and integrated stress tensor components y(lL), aij W) ... [Pg.172]

In this section we consider the boundary value problem for model equations of a thermoelastic plate with a vertical crack (see Khludnev, 1996d). The unknown functions in the mathematical model under consideration are such quantities as the temperature 9 and the horizontal and vertical displacements W = (w, w ), w of the mid-surface points of the plate. We use the so-called coupled model of thermoelasticity, which implies in particular that we need to solve simultaneously the equations that describe heat conduction and the deformation of the plate. The presence of the crack leads to the fact that the domain of a solution has a nonsmooth boundary. As before, the main feature of the problem as a whole is the existence of a constraint in the form of an inequality imposed on the crack faces. This constraint provides a mutual nonpenetration of the crack faces ... [Pg.198]

Conventional extmsion or coextrusion may be performed on vertical or horizontal rotary or shuttle mold configurations. In shuttie blow mol ding the extmder and die are in fixed horizontal and vertical position two or more molds shuttie into and out of position beneath the die. By reciprocating in two planes, the mold may remove a parison and permit the extmder to function continuously. [Pg.455]

General-purpose type is a high pressure decorative laminate (HPDL) designed for both horizontal and vertical appHcations where appearance, durabiUty, resistance to stains, and resistance to heat up to 135°C (275°F) are requited. [Pg.536]

Heat Recovery and Seed Recovery System. Although much technology developed for conventional steam plants is appHcable to heat recovery and seed recovery (HRSR) design, the HRSRhas several differences arising from MHD-specific requirements (135,136). First, the MHD diffuser, which has no counterpart ia a conventional steam plant, is iacluded as part of the steam generation system. The diffuser experiences high 30 50 W/cm heat transfer rates. Thus, it is necessary to allow for thermal expansion of the order of 10 cm (137) ia both the horizontal and vertical directions at the connection between the diffuser and the radiant furnace section of the HRSR. [Pg.435]

Molybdenum, a typical transition element, has the maximum number, five, of unpaired Ad electrons, which account for its high melting point, strength, and high modulus of elasticity. There are many similarities between molybdenum and its horizontal and vertical neighbors in the periodic system. [Pg.463]

Although a great number of compound semiconductor devices make use of epitaxy to form the cote vertical stmcture of the device, ion implantation (qv) is a powerful tool in creating both horizontal and vertical modifications to a device. Ion implantation can be used to dope a semiconductor either fi- or / -type by using appropriate species. Implantation can also be used to render a region semi-insulating or to initiate multilayer intermixing. [Pg.381]

The heai4 of an adsorbent wheel system is a rotating cyhnder containing the adsorbent. Figure 16-55 illustrates two types horizontal and vertical. In some adsorbent wheels, the adsorbent particles are placed in basket segments (a multitude of fixed beds) to form a hori-... [Pg.1553]

High-Speed Mixers High-speed mixers include continuous-shaft mixers and batch high-speed mixers. Continuous-shaft mixers have blades or pins rotating at high speed on a central shaft. Both horizontal and vertical shaft designs are available. Examples include the vertical Schugi mixer (Fig. 20-84) and the horizontal pin or peg... [Pg.1894]

One of the most important material-handling techniques in the chemical industry is the movement of material suspended in a stream of air over horizontal and vertical distances ranging from a few to several hundred feet. Materials ranging from fine powders through 6.35-mm (lA-in) pellets and bulk densities of 16 to more than 3200 kg/m (1 to more than 200 Ib/ft ) can be handled. A large, capable manufacturing... [Pg.1927]
