This research was supported by the Environmental Protection Agency (Grant No. EPA 809561). K.F.H. gratefully acknowledges the Japanese Ministry of Education for a research scholarship. Also this work would not have been completed without the kindness and support of Professor T. Yasunaga and Drs. M. Sasaki, T. Ikeda, and N. Mikami of Hiroshima University. The authors wish to thank Dr. V. Tripathi for his help in the computer modeling of the equlibrium data. [Pg.140]

Table III suggests some of the proton transfer kinetic studies one is likely to hear most about in the near future. The very first entry, colloidal suspensions, is one that Professor Langford mentioned earlier in these proceedings. In the relaxation field, one of the comparatively new developments has been the measurement of kinetics of ion transfer to and from colloidal suspensions. Yasunaga at Hiroshima University is a pioneer in this type of study (20, 21, 22). His students take materials such as iron oxides that form colloidal suspensions that do not precipitate rapidly and measure the kinetics of proton transfer to the colloidal particles using relaxation techniques such as the pressure-jump method. Makoto Yamashita Makoto Yamashita, born in 1974 in Hiroshima, received his Ph.D. from Hiroshima University in 2002 under the guidance of Professor Yohsuke Yamamoto and Professor Kin-ya Akiba. He spent two years as a JSPS research fellow under the supervision of Professor John F. Hartwig at Yale University and Professor Takayuki Kawashima at The University of Tokyo. He started his current appointment as a research associate with Professor Kyoko Nozaki at The University of Tokyo in 2004. His current research interests are organometallic chemistry, organome-tallic catalyst, polymer chemistry, and main group chemistry. He has been awarded Inoue Research Award for Young Scientist (2005) and Takeda Pharmaceutical Company Award in Synthetic Organic Chemistry, Japan (2005). [Pg.471]

The structural elucidation of the ginsenosides was challenging, but thanks to the dedicated work of Prof. Shibata (Tokyo University)2 and of Prof. Tanaka (Hiroshima University)3 their full stereochemistry is known. The ginsenosides are saponins of the dammaran class and are of two different types ... [Pg.215]

Eiichi Kimura is retired from the Department of Medicinal Chemistry at Hiroshima University in Japan. His recent research interests have included the supramolecular chemistry of macrocyclic polyamines and their use in molecular recognition and as zinc-enzyme models. These interests have led to the development of fluorophore sensors for Zn(II) [8] use of macrocycles to effect selective recognition of anions [9], nucleobases in polynucleotides [10], thymidine mono- and diphosphate nucleotides (11), carbonic anhydrase and carboxypeptidase [12], and development of Zn(II)-macrocycle anti-HIV agents [13], In May 2004, he received a Purple Ribbon Award from the Emperor of Japan. [Pg.7]
