In 1982 a study of the usefulness of DBBF in the production of a blood substitute was reported (99). A single modification achieved the dual goals of reduced oxygen affinity and restricted tetramer—dimer dissociation. This work was confirmed in 1987 (98). The product, called aa-hemoglobin, was formulated in Ringer s lactate. P q under physiologic conditions is 3.7 kPa (28.0 torr). Hill s parameter is 2.2, and the Bohr effect was reduced (100). Plasma retention was increased, and the product appeared to be less heterogeneous than some of the other derivatives under study. Its production was scaled up by Baxter Healthcare Corp., under contract to the U.S. Army.

It is necessary to study the Reynolds number independence in the hill scale and in the model as part of a complete model experiment. The threshold or the critical Reynolds number, Re, for the problem considered should be found by the experiments, and measurements should be made at either the same Reynolds number as in the full scale or at a Reynolds number equal to or larger than Re if the Reynolds number in the full scale is larger than Re. for the problem considered. 

For E-glass-epoxy, the Tsai-Hill failure criterion seems the most accurate of the criteria discussed. However, the applicability of a particular failure criterion depends on whether the material being studied is ductile or brittle. Other composite materials might be better treated with the maximum stress or the maximum strain criteria or even some other criterion.

Born in 1907 to Robert and Maria Carson, Rachel developed her admiration for nature in the woods and wetlands of her home in the Allegheny hills of western Pennsylvania, Her mother nurtured this interest with nature-study books. Alkyl mercuric hydrides are generated in situ by reduction of an alkyl mercuric salt with sodium borohydridc (Scheme 3.91). Their use as radical traps was first reported by Hill and Whitesides491 and developed for the study of radical-olefin reactions by Giese,489490 Tirrell492 and coworkers. Careful choice of reagents and conditions provides excellent yields of adducts of nucleophilic radicals (e.g. -hexyl, cyclohexyl, /-butyl, alkoxyalkyl) to electron-deficient monomers (e.g. acrylics). 

Hill et al. [117] extended the lower end of the temperature range studied (383—503 K) to investigate, in detail, the kinetic characteristics of the acceleratory period, which did not accurately obey eqn. (9). Behaviour varied with sample preparation. For recrystallized material, most of the acceleratory period showed an exponential increase of reaction rate with time (E = 155 kJ mole-1). Values of E for reaction at an interface and for nucleation within the crystal were 130 and 210 kJ mole-1, respectively. It was concluded that potential nuclei are not randomly distributed but are separated by a characteristic minimum distance, related to the Burgers vector of the dislocations present. Below 423 K, nucleation within crystals is very slow compared with decomposition at surfaces. Rate measurements are discussed with reference to absolute reaction rate theory.
