High colorimetric method

In view of the chromophoric character of the elemental iodine itself, many colorimetric methods have been proposed for the deterrnination of inorganic iodine (88—92). These methods use the visible portion of the spectmm in reading iodine concentrations. In the visible range the extinction coefficient for iodine is not high enough to be used for minute quantities of iodine in water and other solvents (93). Higher sensitivities have been reported for elemental iodine in potassium iodide solutions in the ultraviolet (93,94). [Pg.364]

Analytical and Test Methods. o-Nitrotoluene can be analyzed for purity and isomer content by infrared spectroscopy with an accuracy of about 1%. -Nitrotoluene content can be estimated by the decomposition of the isomeric toluene diazonium chlorides because the ortho and meta isomers decompose more readily than the para isomer. A colorimetric method for determining the content of the various isomers is based on the color which forms when the mononitrotoluenes are dissolved in sulfuric acid (45). From the absorption of the sulfuric acid solution at 436 and 305 nm, the ortho and para isomer content can be deterrnined, and the meta isomer can be obtained by difference. However, this and other colorimetric methods are subject to possible interferences from other aromatic nitro compounds. A titrimetric method, based on the reduction of the nitro group with titanium(III) sulfate or chloride, can be used to determine mononitrotoluenes (32). Chromatographic methods, eg, gas chromatography or high pressure Hquid chromatography, are well suited for the deterrnination of mononitrotoluenes as well as its individual isomers. Freezing points are used commonly as indicators of purity of the various isomers. [Pg.70]

Analytical Techniques. Sorbic acid and potassium sorbate are assayed titrimetricaHy (51). The quantitative analysis of sorbic acid in food or beverages, which may require solvent extraction or steam distillation (52,53), employs various techniques. The two classical methods are both spectrophotometric (54—56). In the ultraviolet method, the prepared sample is acidified and the sorbic acid is measured at 250 260 nm. In the colorimetric method, the sorbic acid in the prepared sample is oxidized and then reacts with thiobarbituric acid the complex is measured at - 530 nm. Chromatographic techniques are also used for the analysis of sorbic acid. High pressure Hquid chromatography with ultraviolet detection is used to separate and quantify sorbic acid from other ultraviolet-absorbing species (57—59). Sorbic acid in food extracts is deterrnined by gas chromatography with flame ionization detection (60—62). [Pg.284]

Atomic absorption spectroscopy is an alternative to the colorimetric method. Arsine is stiU generated but is purged into a heated open-end tube furnace or an argon—hydrogen flame for atomi2ation of the arsenic and measurement. Arsenic can also be measured by direct sample injection into the graphite furnace. The detection limit with the air—acetylene flame is too high to be useful for most water analysis. [Pg.232]

To illustrate the results obtained by this method, a few data are selected from investigations on the contamination of chicken flesh with 7-hexachlorocyclohexane and of cabbage with parathion. El-Ashry et al. [36] studied the complex formation between the bromophenol blue, primaquine, and other important aminoquinoline antimalarials. The colorimetric method used was described as simple and rapid and is based on the interaction of the drug base with bromophenol blue to give a stable ion-pair complex. The spectra of the complex show maxima at 415 420 nm with high apparent molar absorptivities. Beer s law was obeyed in the concentration range 1-8,2-10, and 2-12 pg/mL for amodiaquine hydrochloride, primaquine phosphate, and chloroquine phosphate, respectively. The same reaction was recently proposed to detect creatine kinase (CK), an enzyme of high clinical significance in relation to the investigation of skeletal muscle disease and the diagnosis of myocardial infarct or cerebrovascular accidents. As ATP is a reaction product obtained from the reaction of ADP with creatine phosphate catalyzed by CK, this enzyme can be indirectly measured by the CL intensity read from the subsequent reaction of ATP with luciferin. During all membrane exposures, concentrations of halogens and chlorine dioxide were periodically monitored by "wet chemical methods". Halogens were determined by the DPD colorimetric method described in references [13] and [14]. Tartaric Acid. Quantitative measures of total tartrate are useful in determining the amount of acid reduction required for high acid musts and in predicting the tartrate stability of finished wines. Three procedures may be used. Precipitation as calcium racemate is accurate (85), but the cost and unavailability of L-tartaric acid are prohibitive. Precipitation of tartaric acid as potassium bitartrate is the oldest procedure but is somewhat empirical because of the appreciable solubility of potassium bi-tartrate. Nevertheless, it is still an official AO AC method (3). The colorimetric metavanadate procedure is widely used (4, 6, 86, 87). Tanner and Sandoz (88) reported good correlation between their bitartrate procedure and Rebeleins rapid colorimetric method (87).
