Interaction tests

The tests in the two previous paragraphs are often used because they are easy to perform. They are, however, limited due to their neglect of intermolecular interactions. Testing the effect of intennolecular interactions requires much more intensive simulations. These would be simulations of the bulk materials, which include many polymer strands and often periodic boundary conditions. Such a bulk system can then be simulated with molecular dynamics, Monte Carlo, or simulated annealing methods to examine the tendency to form crystalline phases. [Pg.312]

Interaction tests should be made on all unprotected structures in the vicinity of a proposed cathodic protection installation, and should be repeated annually or at some other suitable interval to ensure that alterations in the layout of plant or in the electrical conditions are taken into account. It is most convenient if the tests on all unprotected pipes or cables are made at the same time, the potential measurements being synchronised with the regular switching on and off of the protection current. Most of these models evaluate the effects of drugs on the behaviour of animals when they are exposed to a novel environment. Novelty normally reduces animals exploratory activity but established anti-anxiety drugs consistently increase exploration of, and approaches to, the novel stimulus and reduce the neophobic ( avoidance ) reaction. The disinhibitory effects of 5-HT3 receptor antagonists are now well documented [29, 30]. These compounds act to restore normal behaviour to animals in conditions which are mildly aversive, such as a novel brightly lit test area. Such effects may be predictive of anxiolytic activity. An example of such disinhibition is the effect of ondansetron in the rat social interaction test in which the level of interaction between two rats is measured under certain defined conditions [29]. In non-aversive conditions this type of behaviour is quite marked, but it is suppressed in novel highly illuminated conditions.
