The extensive use of the Young equation (Eq. X-18) reflects its general acceptance. Curiously, however, the equation has never been verified experimentally since surface tensions of solids are rather difficult to measure. While Fowkes and Sawyer [140] claimed verification for liquids on a fluorocarbon polymer, it is not clear that their assumptions are valid. Nucleation studies indicate that the interfacial tension between a solid and its liquid is appreciable (see Section K-3) and may not be ignored. Indirect experimental tests involve comparing the variation of the contact angle with solute concentration with separate adsorption studies [173]. [Pg.372]

Sulfomethylation. The reaction of formaldehyde and sodium bisulfite [7631-90-5] with polyacrylamide under alkaline conditions to produce sulfomethylated polyacrylamides has been known for many years (44—46). A more recent pubHcation (47) suggests, however, that the expected sulfomethyl substitution is not obtained under the previously described strongly alkaline conditions of pH 10—12. This C-nmr study indicates that hydrolysis of polyacrylamide occurs and the resulting ammonia reacts with the NaHSO and formaldehyde. A recent patent claims a new high pressure, high temperature process at slightly acid pH for preparation of sulfomethylated polyacrylamide (48). [Pg.141]

A similar process to SMDS using an improved catalyst is under development by Norway s state oil company, den norske state oHjeselskap AS (Statod) (46). High synthesis gas conversion per pass and high selectivity to wax are claimed. The process has been studied in bubble columns and a demonstration plant is planned. [Pg.82]

A third source of initiator for emulsion polymerisation is hydroxyl radicals created by y-radiation of water. A review of radiation-induced emulsion polymerisation detailed efforts to use y-radiation to produce styrene, acrylonitrile, methyl methacrylate, and other similar polymers (60). The economics of y-radiation processes are claimed to compare favorably with conventional techniques although worldwide iadustrial appHcation of y-radiation processes has yet to occur. The use of such databases enables the searcher to combine indexing parameters, including national and international classifications natural language words ia the full text of patents, ia their claims, or ia abstracts suppHed by iaventor and by professional documentation services and indexing systems of various sorts. Nylon-11. Nylon-11 [25035-04-5] made by the polycondensation of 11-aminoundecanoic acid [2432-99-7] was first prepared by Carothers in 1935 but was first produced commercially in 1955 in France under the trade name Kilsan (167) Kilsan is a registered trademark of Elf Atochem Company. The polymer is prepared in a continuous process using phosphoric or hypophosphoric acid as a catalyst under inert atmosphere at ambient pressure. The total extractable content is low (0.5%) compared to nylon-6 (168). The polymer is hydrophobic, with a low melt point (T = 190° C), and has excellent electrical insulating properties. The effect of formic acid on the swelling behavior of nylon-11 has been studied (169), and such a treatment is claimed to produce a hard elastic fiber (170). [Pg.236]

Class III Premarket Approval. Similar to a new dmg approval, a premarket approval grants the appHcant a Hcense to market a specific weU-characterized device. These devices are subject to the requirements of Section 515 of the Eood, Dmg, and Cosmetic Act. A post-amendment device is a device put ia commercial distribution after May 28, 1976. If it is not substantially equivalent to a preamendment device it is automatically ia Class 111, and a premarket approval appHcation (PMA) is required. The appHcation must iaclude reports of preclinical and clinical studies done ia support of claims of safety and efficacy as well as any labeling claims made for the device. Once the PMA is submitted, the PDA determines whether the appHcation iacludes the required information. If the PMA is suitable for scientific review, the PDA has 180 days from the filing date to approve or deny the appHcation. Polybutester, polydioxanone, polyglyconate, and ePTPE sutures are all regulated as Class 111 devices. [Pg.270]

Abbott Laboratories, which has conducted additional toxicity and carcinogenicity studies with cyclamate, a 10 1 mixture of cyclamate—saccharin, and cyclohexylamine, claimed to be unable to confirm the 1969 findings. Abbott then filed a food additive petition for cyclamate in 1973, which was denied by the FDA in 1980. In 1982, the Calorie Control Council and Abbott Laboratories filed a second food additive petition containing the results of additional safety studies (73). That petition was stiU pending as of 1996. Cyclamate is, however, allowed for use in any or all three categories, ie, food, beverage, and tabletop, in about 50 countries. Sweet n Low, known in the United States as a saccharin-based table-top sweetener, contains exclusively cyclamate in Canada. [Pg.277]
