Reppe process yields are about 80%, but the usual acetylene drawbacks are present hazardous materials handling and higher-cost raw materials. As a result the acetylene route plants are not being duplicated as they wear out, giving way to the newer technologies.

Sound practice dictates that storage tanks and process vessels containing hazardous chemicals be properly designed and used only for their intended purpose. They should also have, as a minimum, overflow alarms. Once these conditions are met, it remains to ensure the structural soundness of the containers, to enforce proper hazardous materials handling procedures, and to construct and maintain secondary containment and collection facilities (Shields 1980). 

Initially, 0.5 g (1 mmole) Rb2[Pt(CN)4] 1.5H204 is added to 15 mL H20 with heating (approx. 70°) and stirring. Approximately 1 mL liquefied chlorine gas, cooled in an acetone/dry ice bath, is added cautiously. ( Caution. Chlorine gas is a hazardous material. Handle with care ) The mixture is then stirred for 20 minutes to drive off the excess chlorine, and then an additional 2.5 g (5 mmole) Rb2[Pt(CN)4] 1.5H20 is added. The solution is allowed to stir for another 15 minutes and then evaporated by boiling to 10 mL and finally cooled in an ice bath. The resulting crystals are isolated. An X-ray diffraction powder pattern demonstrates that the crystals are monoclinic Rb 175 [Pt(CN)4] 1.5H20. 

Features for fire prevention were the mechanical properties of some metal material containers and radioactive material form to prevent or reduce the release, and smoke detectors and sprinkler fire suppression systems to prevent or delay ignition of combustible materials. In addition, administrative operating procedures, hazardous material handling training and packaging requirements could also help prevent or mitigate a fire caused by an electrical wiring short or overheat.

Environmental protection and occupational health corporate policies and procedures are documented here. Because environmental protection laws are very involved, many companies will have a separate environmental management systems volume. In that case, this section would describe how that system would interface with the SMS. Also, the SSPP should clearly outline the hazardous materials and chemicals control program and processes used in the plant. Remember to discuss hazardous material handling from procurement to disposal. 

A very useful component of safety awareness is instituting a personnel certification process for hazardous operations. OSHA requires it. Typical certification programs are hazardous material handling, confined space entry, and crane operations. Chapter 10 discusses both safety training and awareness.
