The product can be filtered off as a dark brown crystalline substance (Harvey, 19S9 Klopping, 1960 Littrell et al., 1967). They can also be synthesised by the reaction of calcium cyanamide with chloroformic acid alkyl ester and o-phenylene diamine (Adams and Schlatter, 1966 Toth et al., 1972 Burmakin et al., 1974), or by the reaction of alkyl cyano carbamates (25), produced by the treatment of cyanamide with chloroformic acid alkyl ester, with o-phenylene diamine (Adams and Schlatter, 1969), or by the reaction of cyanamide with alkyl mercaptan, chloroformic acid alkyl ester and o-phenylene diamine (Schlatter, 1970) ...

Interestingly, a survey on attitudes to PI (Nikoleris et al., 2002) revealed, as shown in Figure 2.4, that a change to a non-carbon based economy would be a major stimulus for PI. This was borne out by other data that revealed that 60% of those surveyed felt that a switch to a hydrogen or bioethanol type economy would greatly benefit PI uptake. The work of Dr Adam Harvey at Newcastle University (Harvey, 2006) is likely to result in a portable intensified biodiesel production unit this year. 

Dr Adam Harvey at Newcastle University (Harvey, 2006) is examining the use of oscillatory baffle reactors as components to intensify the production of biodiesel fuels. The research at Newcastle University uses rapeseed oil as the feedstock, the atfiaction being generally that it is a renewable energy source, it reduces CO2 emissions and pollution and it attracts tax relief in the UK at present. The range of PI projects in this area include a portable plant, solid catalysts (which allow a reduced number of process steps compared to liquid catalysts), the development of a reactive extraction process direct from the oilseeds, examination of cold flow properties and the production of biodiesel from algae. 

What was lacking a decade ago in terms of process principles and examples has now been supplied by David Reay, Colin Ramshaw, and Adam Harvey in this book on Process Intensification (PI). The authors chronicle the history of PI with emphasis on heat and mass transfer. For the business manager and project manager the PI Overview presents the value proposition for PI including capital reduction (smaller, cheaper), safety (reduced volume), environmental impact, and energy reduction. In addition, PI offers the promise of improved raw material yields. The authors deal with the obstacles to implanenting PI, chief of which is risk management. 

While those processes involving enzymes tend to progress at rather leisurely paces, some fermentation processes may be limited by oxygen availability and therefore susceptible to mass transfer intensification. The ability to intensify such reactions remains attractive in food production, some pharmaceutics production and waste disposal - in fact reactors such as those based upon oscillatory baffle movement are becoming increasingly a commercial reality - typified by the work of co-author Dr Adam Harvey at Newcastle University on his portable bioethanol plant. (As an aside, a literature search of process intensification inevitably encompasses intensive agriculture - PI on a grander scale )...
