In addition, molybdenum has high resistance to a number of alloys of these metals and also to copper, gold, and silver. Among the molten metals that severely attack molybdenum are tin (at 1000°C), aluminum, nickel, iron, and cobalt. Molybdenum has moderately good resistance to molten zinc, but a molybdenum—30% tungsten alloy is practically completely resistant to molten zinc at temperatures up to 800°C. Molybdenum metal is substantially resistant to many types of molten glass and to most nonferrous slags. It is also resistant to hquid sulfur up to 440°C. [Pg.465]

In the float-glass process, adopted by all leading plate-glass manufacturers, the molten glass is allowed to float and soHdify on the surface of a pool of molten tin which provides an ideally flat surface. Hexagonal boron nitride is relatively stable in oxygen or chlorine up to 700°C, probably because of a protective surface layer of boric oxide. It is attacked by steam at 900°C, and rapidly by hot alkaU or fused alkaU carbonates. This quenched glass, termed frit, is a friable material easily reduced to small-sized particles by a ball-milling operation. During the manufacture of glass, considerable dust, with particles averaging about 300 /xm in size, will be emitted. Some dusts may also be emitted from the handling of the raw materials involved. Control of this dust to prevent a nuisance problem outside the plant is a necessity. When glass is blown or formed into the finished product, smoke and gases can be released from the contact of the molten glass with lubricated molds.
