Grain with solubles

By-Products. After the removal of alcohol, the fermentation residues are processed to produce distiUers grains. These residues consist of proteins, fats, minerals, vitamins, and fiber that are concentrated threefold by removal of the starch. DistiUers grains are usually divided into one of four groups including distiUers dry grains (DDG), distiUers dry solubles (DDS), distiUers dry grains with solubles (DDG/S), and condensed distiUers solubles (CDS). [Pg.85]

In most of today s ethanol plants for the conversion of wheat, rye and corn, the required thermal energy is provided by natural gas, heavy fuel oil or coal. The protein-rich by-products of ethanol plants are referred to as dried distillers grains with solubles , abbreviated as DDGS, and are mostly used for animal fodder. Alternatively, they can be converted to biogas for heat and electricity production. The resulting residue can then be used as fertiliser (see Table 7.16). [Pg.219]

Figure 1 shows an elementary schematic diagram for process flows within a typical dry mill operation. A proposed process for converting the residual starch and fiber in wet DG into ethanol and HDG and hydrolyzed distiller s grain with solubles (HDGS) is shown schematically in Fig. 2. [Pg.1141]

In a conventional dry grind process, ground com is mixed with water to produce slurry. The slurry is cooked the slurry starch liquefied, saccharified and fermented to produce ethanol. The remaining nonfermentables (germ, fiber, and protein) are recovered at the end of the dry grind process as an animal food co-product, called distiller dried grains with solubles or DDGS. [Pg.239]

The liquid left after distillation is subjected to centrifugation, where most of the suspended solids are separated. The clear liquid can be recycled by adding it back to the starch conversion stage. The moist cake released by the centrifuges is mixed with the syrup produced by the evaporator to form a homogenous mixture and is dewatered in dryers.
