Good fertility

Ammonium sulfate is a good fertilizer for rice, citms, and vines, and can be especially useful for some sulfur-deficient or high pH soils. Nonfertilizer uses include food processing, fire control, tanning, and catde feed. [Pg.368]

In addition to nitrate and other nitrogen compounds, guano contains phosphate and potassium, thus making it a good fertilizer. Deposits of guano were discovered and studied by Alexander von Humboldt in 1802 [11], This source of fertilizer had thus been known for some time before the development of the Haber process for producing ammonia. However, guano was and is limited and unsustainable as a source of fertilizer for crops, particularly on a worldwide basis. [Pg.29]

Although Jerusalem artichoke can grow on poor soils, tuber size tends to be small and yields are low. Jerusalem artichoke prefers fertile soils, which are necessary for high yields. The highest tuber yields are typically obtained in light, sandy soils of good fertility. Jerusalem artichoke is adapted to rich sandy loams and well-drained alluvial soils (Huxley, 1992). [Pg.337]

Spinach requires moderate levels of potassium and phosphorus and high levels of nitrogen. It is also sensitive to low levels of calcium and boron. Have the soil tested and amend as necessary. Fast-acting sources of nitrogen, such as bloodmeal and soybean meal, are good fertilizers for spinach. [Pg.211]

At Pine Bluff Arsenal in Arkansas the machinery which for twenty years had been mass-producing disease was used to turn the germs into a harmless sludge, which was spread upon the ground as an army public relations officer explained what a good fertilizer it would make. And, on a small, bleak island off the Scottish coast the warning signs were due to be repainted. [Pg.103]

Neutralization. The acid-base properties of ammonia are very useful in spill situations. This is an important reaction often used in spill response and disposal. Ammonia will react with acids to give salts and water. The product, an ammonium salt, often makes a good fertilizer. [Pg.706]

Ammonium compounds such as ammonium phosphates, NH H PO and (NH )jHPO, are good fertilizers because they supply two vital nutrients, nitrogen and phosphorus. During the growing season, soil microorganisms convert the ammonium ion to nitrate, which is the main form taken up by plants. [Pg.983]

Ammonia is appiied to the soii directiy as a gas, or it is mixed with water to form an ammonia solution. It can also be converted to other compounds such as urea (CO(NH2)2), ammonium nitrate (NH4NO3), or ammonium sulfate ((NHJjSOJ, all of which make good fertilizers. [Pg.447]

Maintenance of good fertility. Arable crops and good grass require a high level of fertility, i.e. the soil must be adequately suppUed with lime, nitrogen, phosphates, potash and organic matter. Under these conditions crops can compete strongly with many weeds. [Pg.111]

Besides being a good fertilizer, ammonium nitrate (as well as some other nitrates) are also good explosives. Ammonium nitrate explodes according to the following reaction ... [Pg.1054]

Hopkinson us formaldehyde in the preparation of fertilizer from inedible or trash fish. In this process formaldehyde serves both as a preservative and as a hardener of the solid fish substance. As a result, it is possible to obtain a dry, oil-free mash, which is not contaminated b products of putrefaction on digesting and pressing the treated fish. This mash is a good fertilizer. By-product oil is relath ely free of impurities... [Pg.332]
