Other Nitrates

Calcium nitrate Ca(N03)2, magnesium nitrate Mg(N03)2, barium nitrate Ba(N03)2 and bismuth nitrate Bi(N03)2, whether dry or in solution, have no action on aluminium. In a solution of 600 g-l calcium nitrate Ca(N03)2, the decrease in thickness of 3003 is below 0.1 mm per year. 

While zinc nitrate Zn(N03)2 has no action on aluminium, the nitrates of other heavy metals such as copper, chromium, cobalt, mercury, nickel, and lead provoke severe pitting corrosion of aluminium.

The successful introduction of silver nitrate leads us to test other nitrates. In particular some transition metal nitrates have even lower melting temperatures (=55°C for cobalt nitrate). 

Nitromatweed (Matweed Nitrate, Nitrosparte in Fr). Prepd by nitration of dried matweed with mixed nitric-sulfuric acids in a manner similar to the prepn of NC. RI 1.447 sol in eth insol in w. The nitrate is polymerized to the 1-nitropropene polymer (qv) by aq NaOH. Prepn is by reacting propene with N204 in eth at 0° for 3 hrs. The nature of the electrophile in this nitrating mixture is still not wholly agreed upon whereas kinetic evidence can be interpreted as consistent with nitration by nitronium ion, the fact that substituents with lone pairs of electrons or it-electrons give markedly different ortho para ratios from other nitrating mixtures is usually conceded to be consistent with the electrophile being something other than the nitronium ion. The balance of evidence at present is in favour of pro-tonated acetyl nitrate being the electrophile.

Magnesium nitrate has been reported to undergo spontaneous decomposition in DMF, (possibly as a result of hydrolysis of the hexahydrate above its m.p., 90°C to liberate nitric acid). Although this effect has not been observed with other nitrates, reaction mixtures with hydroly sable nitrates should be treated with care. See Sodium nitrate Jute, Magnesium chloride... 

Uncertainty factor 3 no unusually susceptible populations were identified and the end point was a threshold effect. More severe headaches are known to occur in some patients medicated with other nitrate esters and the threshold for vasodilatation in the key study did not vary greatly among individuals. 

Karl Bosch (1874-1940) and Alwin Mittasch (1869-1953) of Badische Anilin- und Soda-Fabrik eliminated the nitrate shortage that occurred after the British sea blockade effectively cut off the nitrate supply from Chile. By May of 1915, they had successfully developed at their Oppau Plant an industrial-scale process for oxidizing ammonia. Their process converted the large quantities of synthetic ammonia produced by the Haber process to nitric acid and other nitrates that were essential for fertilizers and explosives. (10)...
