A4-3-Ketones react easily with ethylene glycol or other glycols in the presence of p-toluenesulfonic acid to give 3-ketals with migration of the 4,5-double bond to the 5,6-position.57 With 19-nor-A4-3-ketones a mixture of A5(6)-and A5(10)-enes is obtained.190 In this series selectivity is achieved only in the presence of the 17-ketone when exchange dioxolanation is used.32 Andros-tenedione has also been converted into the 3-monoketal by initial protection of the 17-ketone as the cyanohydrin.52 Similarly, the 3-monoketal (34) has... [Pg.465]

The cyanohydrin synthesis of a-hydroxy acids is very often carried out without isolation or purification of the cyanohydrins. The various techniques for the preparation of the cyanohydrins are discussed elsewhere (method 390). Hydrolysis to the a-hydroxy acids is usually effected by heating with concentrated hydrochloric acid. Excellent directions are given for mandelic acid (52% over-all from benzaldehyde), a-methyl-a-hydroxybutyric acid (65% from methyl ethyl ketone), and eighteen dialkyl- and alkylphenyl-glycolic acids (60-80%). Sodium hydroxide solution is used in the preparation of /S-hydroxypropionic acid from the /S-hydroxy nitrile (80%). ... [Pg.212]

Adsorption. Organic compounds are adsorbed on activated carbon and synthetic resins (eg, XAD-2 and XAD-4, Rohm and Haas Co.). This technique depends on the properties of the compound being removed and the regenerative capabiHty of the adsorbent. The EPA has developed carbon-adsorption isotherms for various toxic organic compounds, and the results are shown in Table 7 (36). The following compounds are not adsorbed on activated carbon acetone cyanohydrin, butylamine, choline chloride, cyclohexylamine, diethylene glycol, ethylenediamine, hexamethylenediamine, morpholine, and triethanolamine. [Pg.226]
