The global impact of environmental issues

Excluding terrorist activities, there have been a number of large-scale industrial and maritime accidents in recent decades that have become 

Smaller, more localised incidents may not reach the national media because in some way they are not of inferesf to fhe whole country. Even so, the effects of small incidenfs can be fell far away from the original source. Incidents resulting in acid rain, oil spills, toxic releases and ozone depletion can have an impact many miles from fhe release point. On a more local level, contamination of a local sfream or river can impacf for many miles downstream. 

Members of the public are becoming increasingly aware of and concerned about their local environment as well as about the global issues. They no longer accept emissions from a factory as fhe price for providing employment. Neighbours of a factory become very alarmed if fhere is news about possible environmental issues such as chemical emissions, contamination of water or soil, release of chemical fumes, efc. Such incidents can be made very newsworthy by local newspapers, radio and TV stations but become one day wonders if the ramifications are essentially local.
