To overcome these difficulties, drilling fluids are treated with a variety of mud lubricants available from various suppHers. They are mostly general-purpose, low toxicity, nonfluorescent types that are blends of several anionic or nonionic surfactants and products such as glycols and glycerols, fatty acid esters, synthetic hydrocarbons, and vegetable oil derivatives. Extreme pressure lubricants containing sulfurized or sulfonated derivatives of natural fatty acid products or petroleum-base hydrocarbons can be quite toxic to marine life and are rarely used for environmental reasons. Diesel and mineral oils were once used as lubricants at levels of 3 to 10 vol % but this practice has been curtailed significantly for environmental reasons. 

Prices of phenolic resins vary substantially depending on the appHcation. In 1995, the price of general-purpose and semisoHds was 1.50— 1.80/kg, whereas epoxy-hardener grades can exceed 2.20/kg. Because raw materials of phenoHc resins are derived from cmde oil and natural gas, the prices of phenohc resins depend on the prices of these resources.

The dry helical lobe rotary compressors nonlubricated cylinder types of compressors are used for injecting of the fuel in gas turbines at the high pressure needed. The gas turbine application requires that the compressor be dry. This standard is primarily intended for compressors that are in special purpose application and covers the minimum requirements for dry helical lobe rotary compressors used for vacuum, pressure, or both in petroleum, chemical, and gas industry services. In general, the thermoplastic elastomers have yet to achieve the aim of replacing general purpose vulcanised rubbers. They have replaced rubbers in some specialised oil-resistant applications but their greatest growth has been in developing materials of consistency somewhat between conventional rubbers and hard thermoplastics. A number of uses have also been developed outside the field of conventional rubber and plastics technology.

Clear soluble fluids. Cresol is a mixture of o-, m- and p-methyl phenol (Fig. 10.7A). Because of its poor solubility, it is solubilized with a soap prepared fiom linseed oil and potassium hydroxide. It forms a clear solution on dilution. This preparation, known as Lysol (Cresol and Soap Solution BP 1968) has been widely used as a general purpose disinfectant but has largely been superseded by less irritant phenolies.
