Gene mapping

Gene linkage maps express recombination frequencies of linked genes on the chromosome. The unit of length in a gene map is the Morgan defined as 1 cM = 1% recombination frequency (in human, 1 cM = 10 bp). 

Physical maps are needed because ordinary human genetic maps are not detailed enough to allow the DNA that corresponds to particular genes to be isolated efficiently. Physical maps are also needed as the source for the DNA samples that can serve as the actual substrate for large-scale DNA sequencing project. The three major goals in physical mapping  

provide accurate distance between a dense set of DNA markers. 

provide a set of DNA samples from which direct DNA sequencing of the chromosome or genome is possible.

Gene Mapping Localizes Specific Genes to Distinct Chromosomes... 

SNP Single nucleotide polymorphism. Refers to the fact that single nucleotide genetic variation in genome sequence exists at discrete loci throughout the chromosomes. Measurement of allelic SNP differences is useful for gene mapping studies.
