Gearbox oil

Apart from being used as bio-diesel , fatty acid esters, which are obtained from fatty acids and alcohols, are becoming increasingly interesting as biodegradable replacements for mineral oils. In some application areas such as chain-saw oil, gearbox oils, hydraulic oils and lubricants for crude oil production these oleochemical products have already proved themselves. 

In contrast to engine oil, transmission (or gearbox) oil usually represents a lifetime filling unless unexpected contamination due to failures occurs, which, depending on the kind of contamination, may be detected potentially by all the physical parameters considered. For the detection of metallic wear particles in transmission oil, both ferromagnetic as well as non-ferromagnetic, the utilization of magnetic sensor principles would be near at hand [16, 17]. 

Proper maintenance of the mechanical equipment and distribution system will ensure optimum operation from the cooling tower over a long period of time. Motors must remain properly lubricated, gearbox oil should be maintained at the proper level, and driveshaft alignment should be checked on a regular basis. Uniform distribution of hot water within the tower is essential in order to maintain optimum tower performance. Refer to Table 3.6 for a suggested preventive maintenance schedule for key tower components.

With oil diagnostic systems it is also possible to recognize defects inside the gearbox. On the other hand, bearing damage, for example, cannot be accurately located. Regular oil diagnosis is also recommended to maximize oil life. 

A typical layout of a palm oil mill is shown in Figure 7 where the main stations of the process are also indicated. The equipment selected has to be carried out with care in order to obtain the correct balance for throughput, steam consumption, energy demands, and economics of the supply of stand-by equipment. Standardization of equipment is an important point to consider when selecting machinery on the basis of within mill and between mills when applicable. When a set range and/or make of equipment can be chosen (e.g., valves, gearboxes, electric motors and starts, etc.), considerable benefits can accrue by way of a reduction in the amount of spare parts to be carried. 

The use of aluminum in the automobile industry is steadily increasing. The replacement of steel permits a decrease in fuel consumption of the vehicles due to weight reduction. In the car industry, aluminum is mainly used in body parts, starters, generators, compressors, admission pipes, oil vats, gearbox housings, cylinder heads, and even engine blocks. 

If roller surfaces become too hot, they may lose hardness and roll tires may lose their shrink-fit. It is difficult to measure roll surface temperature directly but flow and the temperature rise of cooling water may be monitored. Similarly, oil temperatures of gearboxes and hydraulic drive systems, if applicable, are often measured, indicated, and controlled. 

The tail rotor gearbox is critical to directional control and stability but carries only about 5% of the total power. It may be lubricated with the same oil as the main gearbox but, because the bearings and gears are relatively small with low linear sliding speeds, they may be grease lubricated. 

The most important part of the transmission is the main gearbox, which contains the most heavily loaded reduction gears transmitting power to the main rotor blades. It is always oil lubricated but a variety of different oils are used in different helicopters.
