Silicones have a wide variety of applications (Figure 22.27). Due to the strong Si—O and Si—C bonds, silicones are generally imreactive and can be synthesized to perform in temperature ranges of 75°F to 400°F. Silicone oils can be found in cosmetics, car wax, and hydrauhc fluids. The silicone elastomers are used for medical tubing, heart valve implants, electrical tape, caulk, and gaskets. Silicone resins are used to insulate electrical equipment and in the molding process of electronic circuit boards. These examples represent only a small portion of the uses for silicone compounds. Because of this extensive use, several hundred thousand tons of silicones are manufactured each year. [Pg.928]

Formed-in-place gaskets - Silicone RTV sealants are widely used in this application for valve covers, oil pans, thermostats, rear view mirrors. Neoprene sealants have excellent oil and chemical resistance and SBR sealants give good bonding to oily surfaces. Gunnable butyl rubber mastics are used for vibration dampening of panels and as general sealants for frame and body parts. [Pg.295]

Door and window gaskets - Silicone sealants are widely used for aircraft door and window gaskets. They have excellent UV, ozone, chemical and water resistance and can retain excellent rubber properties (extension, compression and high recovery) over the wide range of -85 to 400°F (-65 to 204°C). The silicone elastomer also does not support combustion. [Pg.296]

Auto uses are said to account for about one-third of the 30000 tonnes of silicone rubber consumed annually around the world (in turn about 10% of total silicone consumption). Specific uses include shaft sealing rings, spark plug caps, O-rings (the major market for the fluorosilicones), gaskets, coolant and heater hoses for buses and trucks, and ignition cables. [Pg.839]

It is stated that modem passenger and military aircraft each use about 1000 lb of silicone rubber. This is to be found in gaskets and sealing rings for jet engines, ducting, sealing strips, vibration dampers and insulation equipment. [Pg.839]

Like the 1-RTV systems, the two-part room temperature vulcanization systems (2-RTV) cure to produce flexible elastomers that resist humidity and other harsh environments. Interestingly, they display primerless adhesion property to many substrates, and are used in silicone adhesives, sealants, seals, and gaskets, to name a few. [Pg.685]

Silicones. Silicones are useful where high temperature resistance or compatibility with silicone components such as molded seals are needed. Silicone firewall insulation materials and silicone gaskets and seals are bonded with silicone rubber adhesives. [Pg.1186]

Footnotes (a) Gaskets are also available in other materials, such as hydrogenated nitrile, neoprene, butyl rubber, hypalon, silicon rubber to meet various application requirrnents. (b) Viton is a Du Pont Co. trademark for a series of fluoroelastotners based on the copolymer ofvinylidene fluoride and hexafluoropropylene. [Pg.43]

Approximately 70,000 tons of silicone polymers are produced each year In the United States. Silicones are used as greases, caulking, gaskets, biomedical devices, cosmetics, surfactants, antifoaming agents, hydraulic fluids, and water repellents. [Pg.1525]

The silicon chip reactor was compressed between a top plate, for direct observation of the flows, gaskets with punched holes and a base plate with all fluid connections [13,14]. Thermocouples inserted between the two plates were located next to the micro reactor. A third inlet served for reaction quenching by introducing an inert gas such as nitrogen. Generally, heat removal is facilitated by the special reactor arrangement acting as a heat sink. [Pg.583]

The design of one reactor module is shown in Fig. 5. The water jacket (the thermostat) of colomn reactor is included in two plates (1), outside glass cylinder (2) and four studs (3). The silicone gasket is between the plates and glass cylinder. [Pg.162]

In the top and bottom plates there are unions (4) for connection with ultratermostst. The internal tube of thermostat (5) with the help of silicone gaskets and lock-nuts is fixed on the top and bottom plates of the module. [Pg.162]

We have seen that several kinds of gaskets are used with the various types of flanges. For low and high vacuum at room temperature, elastomers O-rings (rubber, ethylenpropylen, silicon etc.) are used. Small pressures of flanges are needed. The maximum bakeout... [Pg.40]

Silicone elastomers find use as gaskets and seals, wire and cable insulation and hot gas and liquid conduits. They also find use in surgical and prosthetic devices. The RTV elastomers are used for sealing and encapsulating. [Pg.207]

In Fig. 9, the cathode block (4) of stainless steel includes inlet and outlet channels (6) that are each cormected by 6 boreholes for uniform flow distribution to the cathode surface (details see cross section 7). The anode (2) is a platinum foil of 18 cm active area with the brass cover plate (1) as current feeder. The electrode distance is given by the sealing gasket (3), for example, silicon rubber of 0.2-1 mm [85]. [Pg.65]

Position a polyvinylpyrrolidone-free polycarbonate membrane containing 5-pm pores over the lower wells, position the silicone gasket, and assemble the top plate to the chamber. [Pg.302]

The spacer material does not need to be PVC, I used it because it was transparent. You could use rubber gasket material. Just make sure it s soft so that the stack doesn t leak. Transparent silicone rubber would probably be better than PVC, but it s also a lot more expensive. Just make sure you go with 1/8" or 3mm spacing. [Pg.39]
