This work was done in collaboration with Professor Hiroshi Yoneyama of Osaka University [124], The procedure used to prepare the LiMu204 tubules is shown schematically in Fig. 21. A commercially available alumina filtration membrane (Anopore, Whatman) was used as the template. Alumina is especially suited for this application because of its high porosity, monodispersity of pore size, and the fact that it can be heated to high temperature without degradation. This membrane contains 200-nm-diameter pores, is 60 p,m thick, and has a porosity of 0.6. A 1.5 cm X 1.5 cm piece of this membrane was mounted on a Pt plate (2 cm X 2 cm) by applying a strip of plastic adhesive tape (also 2 cm X 2 cm NICHIBAN VT-19) across the upper face of the membrane. The Pt plate will serve as the current collector for the LiMn204 battery electrode material. The strip of tape, which will be subsequently removed, had a 1.0 cm circular hole punched in it, which defined the area of the membrane used for the template synthesis of the LiMn204. [Pg.50]

For many years, nearly all the substrate materials used in the electronics industry were ceramics produced by tape casting (Mistier, 2000). These substrates consist of multiple layers of tape-cast material acting as the insulative carrier, with layers of metal deposited by sputtering, CVD, or evaporation processes. Holes punched into the tapes fill with metal and act as vias or pathways between layers when the tapes are stacked. Stacked layers of tape-cast blanks are laminated together and then sintered to produce a monolithic substrate. This process is detailed in many handbooks on electronics packaging (e g., Harper, 2000). One of the prime benefits is that the layers of the final part can be different different hole patterns, different metallization patterns, even different dimensions on each layer. [Pg.283]

Application to Fabrics with Holes. The specimens with holes punched in them were wet in distilled water, then individually placed on a coarse supporting screen (16/inch mesh) in a Buechner funnel. Slow solvent evaporation is a valuable method for producing crystals of high quality it is used primarily for small molecules. The rate of growth is manipulated by adjusting conditions (initial concentration, temperature, evaporation rate) so that crystals are obtained in a few days, not months or minutes. The rate of evaporation can be adjusted by covering the solution with a watch glass or a piece of film (aluminum or Parafilm ) with a number of small holes punched in it.
