To gain exposure to sectors where, for various reasons, they do not wish to make actual purchases, investors can use a variation on a TR swap called an index swap, in which one of the counterparties pays a total return tied to an external reference index and the other pays a LIBOR-linked coupon or the total return of another index. These instruments have been issued by banks, corporate institutions, and sovereign authorities. They can be tailored to particular risk profiles and enable investors to gain exposure to different markets, sometimes synthetically, that they have previously been unable to access. For instance, by purchasing structured notes, investors can take positions reflecting their views on exchange rates... 

This phase will require some operator and service staff safety awareness training (for both onshore and offshore resoiuces). It will also ultimately require eom-petency management and addressing of any cultural issues, especially with offshore resources. One way forward is to ask key staff on the services to join the active Logica safety community to gain exposure to safety activities and network with staff who are already aetive participants. 

A holding in an ABS also diversifies the risk exposure. For example, rather than invest 100 million in an AA-rated corporate bond and be exposed to event risk associated with the issuer, investors can gain exposure to, for instance, 100 pooled assets. These pooled assets will clearly have lower concentration risk.
