Purchasing structure

The motivations behind the development and use of more exotic, structured notes are varied. They include the desire for increased yield without additional credit risk, as well as the need to alter, transform, hedge, or transfer risk exposure and modify risk-return profiles. These instruments have been issued by banks, corporate institutions, and sovereign authorities. They can be tailored to particular risk profiles and enable investors to gain exposure to different markets, sometimes synthetically, that they have previously been unable to access. Chemical compatibility and U.S. EPA Method 9090 tests must be performed on the synthetics that will be used to construct FMLs. Unfortunately, there is usually a lag period between the time these tests are performed and the actual construction of a facility. It is very rare that at the time of the 9090 test, enough material is purchased to construct the liner. This means that the material used for testing is not typically from the same production lot as the synthetics installed in the field. Interactions between one or more nuclei and the unpaired electron yield a wealth of information concerning molecular structure. In addition, they have proven invaluable in the identification of paramagnetic species. As indicated in Table II many of the common elements have isotopes with nuclear magnetic spins which distinguish them from the other elements. If the isotopes of interest are not sufficiently abundant in the natural form, enriched samples may be purchased. The quantity used in surface studies is usually quite small, so relatively expensive isotopes such as 170 can be studied. In fact, it is possible to recover most of the isotope following an experiment, should the cost require it. 

The sources of these standards include FM manufacturers, synthesis by researchers (especially in the case of NM metabolites), and specialty chemical catalogs. When possible, it is preferable to obtain these standards directly from the FM manufacturers in order to use the authentic material being discharged to wastewater treatment. In all cases, the purchased, synthesized, or obtained standards must be extensively analyzed to confirm the chemical structure and purity.
