Plastic housing

The units and ancillary equipment must be protected from mechanical damage and the effects of weather to ensure the reliable operation of an impressed current station. This is achieved by installing it in a weatherproof plastic housing (see Fig. 8-2). Sufficient ventilation must be provided to disperse heat. The ventilation holes should be protected with brass gauze to keep out animals. Transformer-rectifier units must be connected to a circuit that is continuously energized, especially if they are in a building where the current is turned off at night, e.g., gas stations that are not open for 24 h.

Fractions containing halogenated flame retardants (e.g., from printed circuit boards, cable insulation, and plastic housings) must be incinerated in suitable plants if recycling is not possible. 

Platinum thin-film sensors are available in a broad variety of forms. Depending on the proposed application, the sensor may be unhoused, encapsulated in ceramic, configured as a surface mounted device (SMD) or located within a plastic housing with rigid pins. An overview of the variety of different forms currently available is given below (Fig. 5.2).

A fuze is a complicated mechanical device, metallic or plastic, housing combustible and/or explosive components in a row known as "train". It is designed to initiate an item of ammunition on being subjected to one of the following actions stab, percussion, friction, mechanical time, chemical, electrical or hydrostatic pressure... 

From articles used in electronics, high value precious metals, electronic components and glass electronic components are separated from the plastic housings, which have been generally sent to landfill because there was no economical process to separate the plastics to sufficient purity to enable the plastics to be recycled. The housings are generally made of mixed plastics such as ABS and PC (118). Methods suitable for the recycling of ABS resins have been developed (81,118-120).

PBBs were also widely used as flame retardant additives in polymer formulations, e.g., synthetic fibers, molded plastics and plastic housings also in the manufacture of polycarbonates, polyesters, polyolefins and polystyrenes. Nixed ABS polymers (acrylonitrile -butadiene - styrene), plastics, coatings and lacquers also contained added PBBs to enhance fire-retardancy.

It is easy to see that the aforementioned requirements have a noticeable and positive impact on fire statistics. For example, the significantly lower number of fatalities per capita in fires involving television sets in the United States compared with Europe can be attributed to the UL 94V-0 requirement for the plastic housing in North America.22...
