FOOTPRINT (http //www.eu-footprint.org) is an EC 6th Framework Programme project aiming to develop computer tools to evaluate and reduce the risk of pesticides impacting on water resources in the EU SSPI-CT-2005-022704.

The main EU funding instruments for research, technological development and demonstration are the Framework Programmes (FP), which are implemented mainly by calls for proposals. The FP5 is well advanced and about to be completed, and the FP6 is currently taking place. 

In order to answer those needs specified above, a collaborative effort (BIOSAFEPAPER) was undertaken in the fifth EU framework programme. In this project, coordinated by the University of Kuopio, Finland, nine European research institutes and 16 industrial partners aimed at establishing a test battery with relevant toxicological endpoints and allowing a decision-tree approach to ensure consumer safety. An important aspect of the undertaking was also the development of extraction procedures compatible with the tests and reflecting real-life conditions. 

ABSTRACT This paper reports the further development of a Guideline (formerly Protocol) for sampling and analysis of tars from biomass producer gases. This Guideline is being developed in a project in the European Fifth Framework Programme with additional partners from Switzerland and North America.

EC-funded research has also been developed through the Joint Research Centre s Multi-annual Work Programme (MAWP), embedded into the EU RTD Framework Programme. Several key actions of the MAWP are directly relevant to water policies, e.g. actions related to chemicals in the aquatic enviromnent, ecological water quality, marine ecosystems, the water quality information system, the European Measurement Infrastructure, and policies and human resources for research. 

This diagram however shows an ideal situation which is far from being operational. To make it workable, a strengthened coordination has to be developed among the responsible services at the horizon of the 7th Framework Programme (Figure 10.1.3). 

EU Framework Programmes. They indeed provide knowledge of the ways in which the European level works and of the possibility of developing networks for collaboration with experts in both scientific and policy fields at the European level. Participation also strengthens the science base in conntries, thns providing for strong science , which many consider important in policy development. 

Earlier Framework Programmes were focused on the development of the scientific knowledge to support enviromnental quality standards and objectives, and on the development of technologies for end-of-pipe treatment.
