Extruded Articles. In extmded article compounding, the most important parameters are scorch safety and flow characteristics (53). The bisphenol cure system again offers the best scorch resistance of the available fluorocarbon elastomer cure systems. Good flow characteristics can be achieved through proper selection of gum viscosities. Also, the addition of process aids to the formulation can enhance the flow characteristics. Typical formulations for extmsion grade fluorocarbon elastomers are given iu Table 7. [Pg.513]

Polyvinyl chloride (PVC) is one of the most widely used thermoplastics. It can be extruded into sheets and film and blow molded into bottles. It is used in many common items such as garden hoses, shower curtains, irrigation pipes, and paint formulations. [Pg.332]

Extrudable Nipolit-type expls were developed at PicArsn for use in the development of caseless bombs (Ref 2). Typical formulations contain RDX/Resin 83/17 and RDX/Al/Resin 80/10/10 or 60/23/17. Three resins, Marco MR-280,... [Pg.211]

MIL-P-47136 covers one formulation of plasticized PVC used in the production of flexible tubing, cord, film, sheet, and other various extruded shapes. The Specification requirements are concerned with electrical, mechanical and physical properties and shelf life Refs 1) D. Haft, PATR1592 (1946) 2) H.J. [Pg.832]

Homopolymers and copolymers from amido-sulfonic acid or salt containing monomers can be prepared by reactive extrusion, preferably in a twin screw extruder [1660]. The process produces a solid polymer. Copolymers of acrylamide, N-vinyl-2-pyrrolidone, and sodium-2-acrylamido-2-methyl-propane sulfonate have been proposed to be active as fluid loss agents. Another component of the formulations is the sodium salt of naphthalene formaldehyde sulfonate [207]. The fluid loss additive is mixed with hydraulic cements in suitable amounts. [Pg.49]

Whey may be substituted for starch by as much as 25% in extruded corn snacks, but the product does not puff as much as com alone, as the water-holding whey protein does not react with the starch matrix (Onwulata et al., 1998). WPCs or isolates can be added along with starch to create expanded snack foods with boosted nutritional content however, without texturization, whey proteins in amounts larger than 15% may interfere with expansion, making the products less crunchy. To counter this effect, whey proteins can be texturized with starch to improve their interaction with other food components in a formulation, principally to increase extmdate expansion. In one successful application, between 25% and 35% of the flour was replaced with whey protein (Onwulata et al., 2001a,b). [Pg.192]

We find polyvinyl chloride in so many applications because we can formulate it to be rigid, flexible, or any intermediate hardness required. Rigid polyvinyl chloride is used to manufacture siding, pipes, fences, gutters, window and door frames, credit cards, and many other extruded... [Pg.349]

For formulated compounds small extruders need to be developed [10], while the application for coatings requires dedicated equipment [5]. [Pg.739]

The materials selected for evaluation included three materials currently being used in these applications Biomer (Thoratec Laboratories Corporation, Emeryville, CA), representative of segmented ether-type polyurethanes Avcothane-51 (Avco Everett Research Laboratory, Inc., Everett, MA), a block copolymer of 10% silicone rubber and 90% polyurethane and Hexsyn (Goodyear Tire and Rubber Company, Akron, OH), a sulfur vulcanized hydrocarbon rubber that is essentially a polyhexene. Also selected, because of their easy availability, were Pellethane (Upjohn Company, North Haven, CT), an ether-type of polyurethane capable of being extruded in sheet form, and a butyl rubber formulation, compounded and molded at the National Bureau of Standards. The material thickness varied, but the sheets were generally about 1 mm thick. [Pg.534]

The second group comprises the mixing of the polymer with non-reactive bromine compounds. This can be done by adding the compound to the melt in the extruder, by topical deposition or coating of the polymer with a suitable formulation containing the compound, as well as by exhaustion of dissolved compounds from a solvent bath f11. Cases are also known in which the bromine compound was encapsulated in the polymer in order to avoid deleterious interaction [61. [Pg.131]

In the polymer industry, the melting or degradation behaviors of polymers are important to determine. For example, when a polymer is extruded (i.e., when polymer pellets are converted to film by heating them and drawing them through an extruder), the thermal analysis of the polymer material determines the amount of heat needed in the extruder to make the material pliable. Given the large number of polymer formulations that have been developed and continue to be developed, thermal analysis procedures can be quite important. [Pg.427]
