Of particular interest has been the study of the polymer configurations at the solid-liquid interface. Surfactants have also been of interest for their ability to support reactions in normally inhospitable environments. A useful model has been the pseudophase model [206-209] in which reactants are either in solution or solubilized in micelles and partition between the two as though two distinct phases were involved. In inverse micelles in nonpolar media, water is concentrated in the micellar core and reactions in the micelle may be greatly accelerated [206, 210]. The confining environment of a solubilized reactant may lead to stereochemical consequences as in photodimerization reactions in micelles [211] or vesicles [212] or in the generation of radical pairs [213]. [Pg.484]

An emulsion may be defined as a mixture of particles of one liquid with some second liquid. The two common types of emulsions are oil-in-water (O/W) and water-in-oil (W/0), where the term oil is used to denote the water-insoluble fiuid. These two types are illustrated in Fig. XIV-1, where it is clear that the majority or outer phase is continuous, whereas the minority or inner phase is not. These two emulsion types are distinguished by their ability to disperse oil or water-soluble dyes, their dilution with oil or water, and their conductivity (O/W emulsions have much higher conductivity than do W/0 ones see Ref. 1 for reviews). [Pg.501]

There are numerous articles and references on computational research studies. If none exist for the task at hand, the researcher may have to guess which method to use based on its assumptions. It is then prudent to perform a short study to verify the method s accuracy before applying it to an unknown. When an expert predicts an error or best method without the benefit of prior related research, he or she should have a fair amount of knowledge about available options A savvy researcher must know the merits and drawbacks of various methods and software packages in order to make an informed choice. For dmgs approved originally between 1938 and 1962, the FDA has utilized the Abbreviated New Dmg AppHcation (ANDA) for review of generic products that are pharmaceutical equivalents of the initially approved products.
