As the data in Table VI show, the catalytic activity of the fluorinated zeolites can be either drastically increased or decreased depending on the treatment conditions and post-fluorination treatment. Varying the treatment conditions should allow the catalytic activity of a zeolite to be modified as desired. [Pg.52]

It is well know that the zeolite materials synthesized in alkaline systems usually have a high number of silanol groups (=SiOH) named defect groups [10] which possess a moderated Bronsted acidity [11]. Oppositely, Silicalite-1 synthesized in fluorine media are relatively defect-free [12] and the fluorine ions remain in the small cages of the MFI structure even after the calcination process [12]. The 29Si-NMR analyses carried out on samples Na-Silicalite-1 and F-Silicalite-1 confirm the presence of silanol groups only on the SI support surface (results not showed). Delaminated zeolites (ITQ-6) are obtained by exfoliation of as-synthesized lamellar precursor zeolites [13]. More recently, dealumination was achieved by fluorination of zeolites at ambient temperature with a dilute fluorine-in-air stream, followed by high-temperature calcination (102). The suggested reaction mechanism involves the formation of different aluminum-fluorine compounds along with zeolites containing hydroxyl and fluorine nests. Preferred conditions for the reaction of the zeolite with the metal ammonium fluoride are as follows. A zeolite-water slurry containing about 10-25 gm of zeolite per 100 cm3 of water is preheated to 75-95°C. When substituting Ti, the titanium salt is added to the zeolite as a water slurry containing finely divided crystals, 10 gm of (NH4>2T1F6 per 100 cm3 of water. With iron substitution, the iron salt, when added as (NH4>3FeF6, is added from a 10 wt.% solution of the salt in water. Alternatively, FeF3 can be added to a solution of NH4HF2 or NH F such that the stoichiometry of fluorine (F2) to Fe3+ is 3.0 and the total amount of salt in solution is about 10 wt.%. The addition rate of the metal ammonium fluoride salt to the zeolite slurry is about 0.005 moles of the metal ion per minute per mole of aluminum in the zeolite. [Pg.421]

Linear alkylbenzenes are made from linear terminal olefins and benzene and are important precursors of biodegradable anionic surfactants (LAS, linear alkylbenzenesulfonates). The conventional catalyst is HF, first to be replaced by a fluorinated silica-alumina in the DETAL process.
