The main field of polyurethane application is the furniture industry, around 30% of the total polyurethanes produced worldwide is used for the production of mattresses from flexible slabstock foams. Automotive manufacture is the second important application for flexible and semiflexible polyurethanes (seat cushioning, bumpers, sound insulation, and so forth). Rigid polyurethane foams are used in thermal insulation of buildings and refrigerators, cold stores, pipe insulation, refrigerated transport, thermal insulation in chemical and food industries. The polyurethane elastomers are used for shoe soles,... [Pg.2]

The largest-volume use of flexible foam is furniture and bedding, which account for nearly 47% of the flexible polyurethane foam market. Almost all furniture cushioning is polyurethane. Automobile seating is either made from flexible slabstock or poured directly into frames, so-called deep seating, using HR chemical formulations. Semiflexible polyurethane foams find use in crash pads, arm and head rests, and door panels. [Pg.483]

In flexible slabstock and molded polyurethane foam production, methylene chloride, CO2 (liquid or gas injection), and water are used as ABAs. In rigid insulation foams CFCs have been replaced with HFC-134a (sometimes blended with HFC 152a) or liquid CO2. In integral skin polyurethane products, CO2, water, and hydrocarbons are used for the purpose. [Pg.117]

The same company has developed a new generation of highly flame resistant open cell flexible PU/CR hybrid foam materials. The polyurethane and chloroprene are prepared using a brand-new technology called Foam-One. This is a batch process for making flexible slabstock under variable pressure that may range from 1 psi to 25 psi. PU base foams are post-treated with a polychloroprene compound to obtain the hybrid grades. [Pg.72]

Organometallic salts, such as organotin catalyst, encourage linear chain extension and are used in flexible slabstock, rigid foam, and a variety of noncellular elastomer and coating applications. Stannous octoate is the most broadly accepted catalyst of this type for polyurethane formulation, although other organotins and potassium salts are also used. [Pg.450]

A U.S. EPA study in 1993 estimated the U.S. production of flexible polyurethane foam slabstock at 600,000 tons. The 25 companies that manufactured foam at the time were estimated to emit 15,000 tons of methylene chloride (CH2CI2) into the atmosphere. This amounted to 10% of the total emission of this hazardous air pollutant (HAP) into the air nationwide. The volatile emissions from the industry (estimated by industry sources in 1992) is sununarized in Table 1.5 (note no process water is used in flexible polyurethane manufactnie, so only air emissions are considered.)... [Pg.43]

The requirements of flexible polyurethane slabstock foam manufachirers vary due to sensitivity to antioxidant volatility, preference in physical form (liquid or sohd), and degree of anti-scorch protection. As a result of this broad variation in antioxidant performance demands, several alternative antioxidants to BHT are available. AO-2 and AO-3 combine relatively low volatility and good anti-scorch performance with the advantage of a liquid product form. AO-4 and AO-5 have significantly lower volatility than BHT and improved performance. Addition of peroxide scavengers such as DTDTDP and PHOS-1 can further enhance the scorch resistance of the polyurethane foam. [Pg.574]
