These eco-saboteurs, as they are sometimes referred to, are suspected of at least six incidents since September 2001 (1) a firebombing at a federal corral for wild horses in northeastern California (2) a fire at a primate research center in New Mexico (3) release of more than 1000 mink from a farm in Iowa (4) release of pigeons raised for research in Iowa (5) fires at an Oregon tree farm and a laboratory at the University of Washington and (6) a fire that destroyed a McDonald s restaurant in Tucson, Arizona. In recent years, the groups have also claimed responsibility for starting fires at a Vail, Colorado ski resort, which they say impacted a lynx habitat. [Pg.321]

Collection of chemical carcinogens, all waste products, animal carcasses and other materials from the laboratory should be performed by designated personnel on a scheduled basis or when necessary. The suspect or carcinogenic materials should not be placed on uncontrolled loading docks for pickup by general refuse collection personnel. At the National Institutes of Health, the special collection of hazardous materials, including chemical carcinogens, is done by personnel of the Fire Department. In the instance of one of the NCI contractor sites, Frederick Cancer Research Center, located at a military post, personnel from the safety offices perform this service. [Pg.204]

In the case of the porosity measurements, in addition to the same cellulose samples, samples of oak and white pine were also examined. These samples of wood were ordinary commercial lumber samples (the same pine having been previously used in fire experiments at the Center for Fire Research of the National Institute for Standards and Technology). The pine had an initial dry density of 0.377 g/cc, and the oak 0.734 g/cc. Both of these wood samples were pyrolyzed for two hours at 1273 K, in helium, in order to prepare the chars for testing. The char yields were in the neighborhood of 28% by mass of the starting oak and 26% by mass of the starting pine. [Pg.1248]

By the late 1960s, engineers of all stripes concluded that the world was in the midst of a crisis of modernity, characterized by men on the moon and children on fire campus research centers occupied by student dissidents environmental hazards resistant to linear solutions an aerospace industry subsidized by the Department of Defense a creed of individualism and company loyalty in a system that normalized mass layoffs and a popular culture in which journalists wrote proudly that There is no stopping the engineering mentality, we can only try and stop the Engineers (Marine 1969, p. 46). [Pg.353]
