Triangle Shirtwaist fire

A fire code (NFPA 101) developed by the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) for the preservation of life from a fire event or its associated hazards. It is primarily concerned with exit facilities and arrangements and protection against fire events. As a result of the large life loss of the Triangle Shirtwaist Fire in New York in 1911, the NFPA was challenged to provide life safety measures for factories and loft buildings, control of smoking in hazardous areas, improved exits, and provision of fire drills. NFPA 101, Life Safety Code, is the standard that is used to delineate the appropriate fire exit requirements. 

The irony of the fire is in the reminiscence of the infamous Triangle Shirtwaist Fire that occurred in New York City in 1911. There were 146 workers killed and another 70 seriously injured when fire broke out in a fireproof building where garments were manufactured. Some exits were only 20 inches wide and the employer locked others to prevent theft. Workers were eventually able to break through a door to reach a fire escape, but it soon collapsed.

A fire gutted a new structure in the Triangle Shirtwaist Factory in New York City. This 1911 tragedy killed 145 workers, whose escape was prevented due to the employer s locking of the exits against theft.
