Aerosol technology may be defined as involving the development, preparation, manufacture, and testing of products that depend on the power of a hquefied or compressed gas to expel the contents from a container. This definition can be extended to iaclude the physical, chemical, and toxicological properties of both the finished aerosol system and the propellants. [Pg.344]

There are numerous variations of the wet process, but all involve an initial step in which the ore is solubilized in sulfuric acid, or, in a few special instances, in some other acid. Because of this requirement for sulfuric acid, it is obvious that sulfur is a raw material of considerable importance to the fertilizer industry. The acid—rock reaction results in formation of phosphoric acid and the precipitation of calcium sulfate. The second principal step in the wet processes is filtration to separate the phosphoric acid from the precipitated calcium sulfate. Wet-process phosphoric acid (WPA) is much less pure than electric furnace acid, but for most fertilizer production the impurities, such as iron, aluminum, and magnesium, are not objectionable and actually contribute to improved physical condition of the finished fertilizer (35). In the compounding technique, constituents are selected or rejected because of their odor, taste, and physical chemical properties, eg, boiling point, solubihty, and chemical reactivity, as weU as the results of flavor tests in water, symp, milk, or an appropriate medium. Ultrasonic Microhardness. A new microhardness test using ultrasonic vibrations has been developed and offers some advantages over conventional microhardness tests that rely on physical measurement of the remaining indentation size (6). The ultrasonic method uses the DPH diamond indenter under a constant load of 7.8 N (800 gf) or less. The hardness number is derived from a comparison of the natural frequency of the diamond indenter when free or loaded. Knowledge of the modulus of elasticity of the material under test and a smooth surface finish is required. The technique is fast and direct-reading, making it useful for production testing of similarly shaped parts. [Pg.466]

Standards have been a part of technology since building began, both at a scale that exceeded the capabiUties of an individual, and for a market other than the immediate family. Standardization minimizes disadvantageous diversity, assures acceptabiUty of products, and faciUtates technical communication. There are many attributes of materials that are subject to standardization, eg, composition, physical properties, dimensions, finish, and processing. Implicit to the realization of standards is the availabiUty of test methods and appropriate caUbration techniques. Olig omerization and Polymerization. Siace an aHyl radical is stable, linear a-olefins are not readily polymerized by free-radical processes such as those employed ia the polymerization of styrene. However, ia the presence of Ziegler-Natta catalysts, these a-olefins can be smoothly converted to copolymers of various descriptions. Addition of higher olefins during polymerization of ethylene is commonly practiced to yield finished polymers with improved physical characteristics. [Pg.436]

The physical properties of finish removers vary considerably due to the diverse uses and requirements of the removers. Finish removers can be grouped by the principal ingredient of the formula, method of appHcation, method of removal, chemical base, viscosity, or hazardous classification. Except for method of apphcation, a paint remover formulation usually has one aspect of each group, by which it can be used for one or more appHcations. A Hst of the most common organic solvents used in finish removers has been compiled (3). CPA. Copolymer alloy membranes (CPAs) are made by alloying high molecular weight polymeries, plasticizers, special stabilizers, biocides, and antioxidants with poly(vinyl chloride) (PVC). The membrane is typically reinforced with polyester and comes in finished thicknesses of 0.75—1.5 mm and widths of 1.5—1.8 m. The primary installation method is mechanically fastened, but some fully adhered systems are also possible. The CPA membranes can exhibit long-term flexibiHty by alleviating migration of the polymeric plasticizers, and are chemically resistant and compatible with many oils and greases, animal fats, asphalt, and coal-tar pitch. The quaHty, ie, level of impurities, of the fats and oils used in the manufacture of soap is important in the production of commercial products. Fats and oils are isolated from various animal and vegetable sources and contain different intrinsic impurities. These impurities may include hydrolysis products of the triglyceride, eg, fatty acid and mono/diglycerides proteinaceous materials and particulate dirt, eg, bone meal and various vitamins, pigments, phosphatides, and sterols, ie, cholesterol and tocopherol as weU as less descript odor and color bodies. These impurities affect the physical properties such as odor and color of the fats and oils and can cause additional degradation of the fats and oils upon storage. For commercial soaps, it is desirable to keep these impurities at the absolute minimum for both storage stabiHty and finished product quaHty considerations. [Pg.150]

In the presence of excess fatty acid, different soap crystalline phase compounds can form, commonly referred to as acid—soaps. Acid—soap crystals are composed of stoichiometric amounts of soap and fatty acid and associate in similar bilayer stmctures as pure soap crystals. There are a number of different documented acid—soap crystals. The existence of crystals of the composition 2 acid—1 soap, 1 acid—1 soap, and 1 acid—2 soap has been reported (13). The presence of the acid—soaps can also have a dramatic impact on the physical and performance properties of the finished soap. The presence of acid—soaps increases the plasticity of the soap during processing and decreases product firmness, potentially to the point of stickiness during processing. Distressing Stains. Interest and charm can be added to furniture by the dehberate infliction of imperfections. These imperfections may be caused by physical distress such as hammers, files, nails, chains, or rocks or caused by finish distress such as "dy specking" or staining to simulate past abuse, such as waterstains caused by the careless placement of a drinking glass. [Pg.339]

Physical distressing is usually a part of the initial finishing procedure and is done in the white wood stage. Finish distressing is normally part of the latter phases of the finishing operation. Internal surfactant antistats ate physically mixed with the plastic resin prior to processing. When the resin is melted, the antistat distributes evenly in the polymer matrix. The antistat usually has some degree of solubiUty in the molten polymer. However, when the polymer is processed (extmded, molded, etc) into its final form and allowed to cool, the antistat migrates to the surface of the finished article due to its limited solubiUty in the solidified resin. The molecule of a surface-active agent is composed of a polar hydrophilic portion and a nonpolar hydrophobic portion. The hydrophilic portion of the surfactant at the surface attracts moisture from the atmosphere it is the moisture that has the static dissipative effect. [Pg.297]
