Finish coat

Finishing lime is a refined hydrated lime, milled to make it suitable for plastering, particularly the finish coat. Putty derived from this hydrate possesses unusually high plasticity. 

Any of these mortars can be used for unit masonry or for stucco (exterior plaster). The finish coat in conventional interior plastering is composed of either neat time putty or a sanded putty, gauged with Keene s cement or gypsum-gauging plaster. The former is called a whitecoat finish the latter a sandfloat finish.

Application of protective paints consists of surface preparation of steel, priming coat and finishing coats. Wherever possible, steel should be blast-cleaned before painting. Primers thoroughly wet the metal to promote adhesion of finishing paints and carry inhibitive pigments. For example, red lead oxide will minimize the spread of rust on metal surfaces. The total thickness of fmishing coats must be at least 0.125 mm for adequate protection and life. Four coats of paint usually are necessary to achieve this. 

The paint is sensitive to moisture during storage and application but then becomes exceptionally water-resistant. Its best use is for exterior exposure in an aggressive environment but where the maximum gloss and color retention is required. It is preferable to apply the urethane as a finishing coat over epoxy undercoating and priming. 

Undercoats are invariably of high pigment content and low gloss. Their function is to provide a foundation that is uniform in both colour and texture for the finishing coats, thereby enhancing the final appearance of the completed system. On occasions, it is possible to achieve the same result by substituting an additional coat of finish for the undercoat, and this may improve the durability of the system. 

Paint films exposed to condensation often fail unexpectedly by very early blistering between primer and finishing coat, usually associated with soluble salts trapped under the relatively impermeable finishing coat. Relatively more permeable latex-based paints are less prone to this failure. 

Figure 19.60 illustrates a steel surface which should have been blast cleaned to a high standard before being coated at works with a zinc-rich epoxy primer and on site with two-pack intermediate and finishing coats.
