POLISHES, COATINGS AND FINISHES

Coated abrasives, such as sheets, disks, and dmms, are used for polishing and finishing. Here, too, the abrasives, such as aluminum oxide and siHcon carbide, have replaced the flint and garnet of common sandpaper. These industrial coated abrasives are manufactured from cloth or tough paper base. 

Many of the finishes applied to other types of metal products can also be applied to zinc die castings, although some differences in formulation as well as occasional differences in method of application may be desirable. The types of finishes applicable to zinc die castings include mechanical finishes (buffed, polished, brushed, and tumbled) electrodeposited finishes (copper, nickel, chromium, brass, silver, and black nickel) chemical finishes (chromale, phosphate, molybdate and black nickel) and organic finishes (enamel, lacquer, paint and varnish, and plastic finishes). Electrodeposited coatings of virtually any metal capable of electrodeposition can be applied to zinc die castings. 

For the AIA-SEM analyses, the raw and clean coal samples were prepared by mixing 2 g of the sample with an epoxy resin and casting into molds 1 in. in diameter. The hardened pellets were polished to reveal a cross section and finished by polishing with 0.3-ym alumina powder. Then the pellets were coated with approximately 500 A of carbon to render sample surfaces electrically conductive for examination in the SEM unit. 

The coated tablets are usually transferred to a polishing pan and coated with a beeswax-carnauba wax mixture to provide a glossy finish to the surface.
