The formulation of calcium chelate materials is based upon the formation of a low-solubiUty chelate between calcium hydroxide and a sahcylate. Dycal utilizes the reaction product of a polyhydric compound and sahcyhc acid. Other sahcyhc acid esters can be similarly used. Vehicles used to carry the calcium hydroxide, extenders, and fillers may include mineral oil, A/-ethyl- -toluenesulfonamide [80-39-7] and polymeric fluids. The filler additions may include titanium dioxide [13463-67-7] zinc oxide, sihca [7631-86-9], calcium sulfate, and barium sulfate [7727-43-7]. Zinc oxide and barium sulfate are useflil as x-ray opacifying agents to ensure a density greater than that of normal tooth stmcture. Resins, rosin, limed rosins, and modified rosins may serve as modifiers of the physical characteristics in both the unset and set states.

If a product is light sensitive, appropriate measures to protect it must be taken. This can take the form of addition of opacifying agents to the plastic, use of aluminum foil laminations, or employing light-resistant secondary packaging. 

The pure compound is used in glazes and enamels as an opacifying agent. It also is used to make colored glass, imparting yellow color to the glass. The crude form is used in flaming arc lamps. Another application of this compound is in the preparation of several other cerium salts. 

Opacifiers. Opaque shampoos are produced by incorporating high melting, wax-like, dispersible materials into their preparation. Some of these materials crystallize in such a fashion that they effect a pearlescence in the product. Opacifying agents found in shampoos include the glycol mono- and diesters, higher fatty alcohols such as cetyl and stearyl forms, stearate soaps, and latex copolymer emulsions.

Cerium oxide has a high refractive index, and is an opacifying agent in enamel compositions [28] used as protective coatings on metals. 

Octyidodecanol is widely used in cosmetics and pharmaceutical applications as an emulsifying and opacifying agent. It is primarily used in topical applications because of its lubricating and emollient properties. 

Zinc stearate is primarily used in pharmaceutical formulations as a lubricant in tablet and capsule manufacture at concentrations up to 1.5% w/w. It has also been used as a thickening and opacifying agent in cosmetic and pharmaceutical creams and as a dusting powder. See Table I. 

Since microporous thermal insulation made from fumed silica is used in higher temperature areas and Si02 is radiation permeable in the infrared, the addition of a so-called opacifying agent is needed to reduce the radiation.
