Results obtained by Mints [302] confirm the presence of adherent particles of the suspension on the sand surface. The filtration process is rated by the filtration index jS, which characterizes the retentivity of the sand. Since the filtration process is largely determined by adhesion of the suspended particles, the quantity characterizes the adhesion of the suspension to the sand grains ... 

Source sampling of particulates requites isokinetic removal of a composite sample from the stack or vent effluent to determine representative emission rates. Samples are coUected either extractively or using an in-stack filter EPA Method 5 is representative of extractive sampling, EPA Method 17 of in-stack filtration. Other means of source sampling have been used, but they have been largely supplanted by EPA methods. Continuous in-stack monitors of opacity utilize attenuation of radiation across the effluent. Opacity measurements are affected by the particle size, shape, size distribution, refractive index, and the wavelength of the radiation (25,26). 

An indatable diaphragm or membrane has been used in membrane plate presses closely related to the conventional plate and frame presses. A pressure filtration period is foUowed by compression with the hydraulically operated membrane or by a hydraulically operated ram if dexible rim seals are fitted. This principle also is used in vertical presses that use either one or two endless cloth belts indexing between plates. Indatable membrane also may be used on a cylindrical filtration surface with or without a preceding pressure filtration stage. 

The Flat-bed pressure filter (Hydromation Engineering Co. Ltd.) (19) is based on the above principle. The pressure compartment consists of two halves, top and bottom. The bottom half is stationary while the top half can be raised to allow the belt and the cake to pass out of the compartment, and can be lowered onto the belt during the filtration and dewatering stage. The filter can be considered as a horizontal filter press with an indexing cloth in comparison with a conventional filter press, however, this filter allows only the lower face of the chamber to be used for filtration. 

The tartrate salt is recrystallized by dissolving in hot methanol, filtering, adding hot ethanol to the filtrate and cooling. The product is collected and air-dried. MP 148°-150°C. A second crop is obtained from the filtrate for a total yield of 59%. The tartrate is then metathe-sized with pamoic acid (Merck Index 6867) to give pyrantel pamoate as the product. 

The expansion index [51,102,103], defined as the ratio of cell fresh weight to dry weight evaluated at the time of maximum fresh weight, is a more qualitative indicator of changes in cell/aggregate size, under various cultivation conditions. Wongsamuth and Doran [58] identified the filtration characteristics of suspensions of Atropa belladonna, specifically cake permeability, which is at least partially related to morphology, as a useful indicator of shear effects. 

The molecular weight distribution of cell wall polysaccharides was estimated by gel filtration with a TOSOH TSK gel G4000 PWXL (7.8 x 300 mm) column equilibrated and eluted with 0.05 M sodium acetate, 0.01 M EDTA, 0.05 M NaCl (pH 5.0) in polyuronide and 0.05 M sodium citrate, 0.1 M NaCl (pH 5.5) in the hemicellulose fraction. Samples (1 mg/ml) of 100 ml were injected. The eluate was monitored by a refractive index detector (Shimadzu R1D-6A, Kyoto, Japan) and collected at the fraction size of 0.4 ml. 

Glomerular filtration rate (GFR) The volume of plasma that is filtered by the glomerulus per unit time, usually expressed as mL/minute or mL/minute/1.73 m2, which adjusts the value for body surface area. GFR is the primary index used to describe overall renal function.

The amount of polymer adsorbed on each sample was measured by pressure filtration through a 0.1 m filter, followed by analysis of the filtrate for residual polymer by gel permeation chromatography with refractive index determination. Particle zeta potentials were measured by taking a small sample of the solids from the centrifuge and re-suspending them in the supernatant prior to analysis in a Malvern Instruments Zetasizer . The concentration of all other types of ions in the supernatant was analysed by ICP atomic emission spectroscopy.

Among the deleterious materials (Fc203, AI2O3, CaO, MgO) in phosphate rock, dolomite is the most troublesome. Dolomite causes higher consumption of sulfuric acids, reduces filtration capacity, and lowers the P2O5 recovery in fertilizer manufacturing. Therefore the MgO content is a very important index in evaluating the quality of the phosphate concentrate, hi Florida, the MgO in the final phosphate concentrate is usually required to be less than 1%. 

Functionality Analysis. Solubility was determined on 1% (w/v) dispersion of protein in 0.2 M phosphate buffers at a pH of 3.0 to 8.0. After stirring for 0.5 hr, the dispersion was filtered (0.45 /xm. Millipore), and the filtrate was analyzed for protein by the BCA method (21). Emulsifying activity index (EAI), expressed as interfacial area/unit weight protein (mVg) / was assessed by the turbidometric method of Pearce and Kinsella (22). 

In a hood, to a well-stirred dispersion of 62 gm (1.35 moles) of methyl-hydrazine, 175 ml of chlorobenzene, and 20 gm of powdered, anhydrous sodium sulfate is added dropwise, with cooling, 61 gm (0.663 mole) of freshly distilled l-chloro-2-propanone. After the addition has been completed, the reaction mixture is stirred for 1 hr. The moist sodium sulfate is separated by filtration and the filtrate is distilled. The fraction boiling between 60°C and 64°C is collected as product, yield 16.8 gm (31 %) of a yellow liquid. On redistillation the boiling point is raised slightly to 61°-64°C, index 1.4300.
