Press frame designs Two different frame designs exist which are distinguished by the location of the press rollers in respect to the frame. [Pg.303]

Figure 274(a) depicts the drive system which was already part of the earliest machines (see Figure 225). More recent machines, instead of powering shaft (3) by transmission belts, apply a motor (5) with a torque-limiting clutch, a gear reducer (4), and a flexible coupling to drive gear shaft (3) mounted in or on the roller press frame. The gear on shaft (3) transmits torque to the coupled gears (2) on the roll shafts between two roller bodies (1). The type of base frame is determined by the design of the piston extruder. The loads exerted on the base frame are mainly of a static nature and are governed by the weight of the components, especially that of the hydraulic cylinder and that of the receiver, moreover by the position of the press frame with the resulting difference in load situations for the base frame and foundation. [Pg.290]

Dynamic loads are only experienced during tilting of the press frame and receiver, when swivel forces are transmitted into the base frame via the tilting cylinder. [Pg.291]

In contrast to this the press frame is subject to a permanent dynamic load as it must absorb the press forces which develop during extrusion between the hydraulic piston and the receiver. [Pg.291]

The two basic materials used in press-frame structures are cast iron and steel fabrications. Stress-strain curves for cast iron or steel indicate that steel has a relative straight-line relationship to the yield point, whereas cast-iron yield is a fracture. However, reputable builders use design criteria in the 4000-5000-... [Pg.269]

There are, however, significant differences in how these different structures are attached to make the press frame. [Pg.284]

Tensioning of the tie rods is accomplished with either the application of heat or hydraulic force. If heat is used, the practice is to insert electric heaters into drilled holes in the ends of the tie rods. When the temperature is raised, the tie rods expand a measured amount and the nuts are tightened. When the tie rods cool, they shrink and preload the press frame. [Pg.285]

A more common practice today is to tighten the nuts securely, stretch the tie rods hydraulically, insert a predetermined thickness of shim under the nuts, and release the hydraulic pressure. In this way, the press frame is preloaded, but it can easily be unloaded if necessary for disassembly by reversing the process. [Pg.285]

As with press frames, slides are manufactured from materials such as cast-iron, cast-steel, or steel fabrications. The style, construction, and type of slide varies with the particular press frame and gibbing requirements. Press frame repairs such as fractures and broken components will generally be limited to the original equipment manufacturer or an outside vendor. [Pg.305]

If the press will still not unstick, the next step would be to loosen both front gibs on the press frame. As the press slide will never bottom out parallel, loosening of the gibs will allow the slide to float and relieve some of the uneven pressure on it. Then, use the press inch control buttons using forward and reverse directions of the motor to unstick the slide. If the gibs were loosened to unstick the press, the die must be removed so the slide can be reset. [Pg.312]
