Including a surfactant in the caustic formulation (surfactant-enhanced alkaline flooding) can increase optimal salinity of a saline alkaline formulation. This can reduce iaterfacial tension and increase oil recovery (255,257,258). Encouraging field test results have been reported (259). Both nonionic and anionic surfactants have been evaluated in this appHcation (260,261).

Volatiles and cuticular extracts from both sexes of the currant stem girdler, Janus integer, were analyzed by GC-EAD using antenna ofboth sexes. Certain tree species such as Betula pendula and Picea abies fail to develop in association with heather, Calluna vulgaris (40. 1). This apparently results from the production by heather of an allelochemical toxic to growth of mycorrhizae of Betula and Picea. Fruticose soil lichens are often allelopathic to the growth of mycorrhizae and forest tree seedlings also (42). Removal of reindeer moss (a lichen) in field tests resulted in accelerated growth of pine and spruce.

Despite the efficiency of DR cationic surfactant solutions and several successful large-scale field tests, commercial use of these solutions has not been widespread largely because of their slow biodegradation properties. A new series of biodegradable mixed zwitterionic/anionic surfactant solutions, which can be disposed of by normal sewage treatment, has been developed by Akzo Nobel with excellent field test results in the primary system of the same district heating system in Herning, Denmark.

Examples of one-dimensional and two-dimensional models to predict the transport of heavy metals under constant DC current are explained in Chapter 25. This model ignores hydraulic advection, electrophoresis, diffusion, and electroosmosis processes and considers only electromigration. Electrical potential distribution is assumed to be a function of the electrical resistance of the soil and depends on the instantaneous local concentration and mobility of all the ions existing in the pore water of the soil. Local chemical equilibrium is assumed to calculate the concentration of chemical species. Validation of these and other developed models based on laboratory and field test results is critical to gain confidence in the accuracy of the model predictions.
