Fertilizers liquid formulations

Pesticides and fertilizers are usually applied at the soil surface either in granular or liquid formulations and are subsequently incorporated by some sort of tillage operation (e.g., discing). 

When buying liquid fertilizers, choose those with an organic symbol of approval if available. They may be formulated as balanced products for general use, or with a high potash... 

Potassium carbonate is used in the chemical industry as a source of inorganic potassium salts (potassium silicates, potassium bicarbonate), which are used in fertilizers, soaps, adhesives, dehydrating agents, dyes, and pharmaceuticals. Potassium carbonate used to make potassium lye produces soft soaps, which are liquids or semisolids rather than solids. Other uses of potassium carbonate includes use as a fire suppressant in extinguishers, as a C02 absorbent for chemical processes and pollution control, an antioxidant in rubber additives, and in pharmaceutical formulations. 

The concentration and the solidification of ammonium nitrate and urea solutions to form solid fertilizers require considerable expenditure of eneq>y and processing expense so it is attractive to use the solutions in the formulation of liquid fertilizers, without processing them into solid form. Formulation scientists usually formulate their product to be used alone in water. The potential of tank mixes or the use of liquid fertilizers as a carrier liquid is considered later in the formulation development process. Obviously, the environment a formulation will encounter in use is very different when it is mixed with one or more agrichemicals as compared to the formulation being mixed in pure water. Rather than having one active ingredient present with surfactants carefully selected to disperse that formulation, two or three active materials with six or eight different surfactants may be present in the spray tank. No wonder there are incompatibilities ... 

This evaluation allows the formulations to be mixed at the actual use rate in either water or liquid fertilizers. It is simple to run, involves no special equipment, allows observation of the nature of any incompatibilities which form, and is a long enough test that the formation of incompatibilities after different periods of time may be determined. A disadvantage is that the evaluations are done under static conditions and, therefore, do not simulate the continuous mixing of a herbicide spray rig. 

Medium pressure techniques, typically called pelleting, utilize extrusion whereby the response to the driving force is caused by friction between the material and die walls (see Section 4.2.2.6). These methods are only applicable if the fertilizer formulation exhibits a certain plasticity to impart flow and bonding either inherently or after the addition of liquid binder(s).

In formulating liquid mixed fertilizers, it is not sufficient to know that att ingredients are water soluble. Many reactions may occur that result in formation of water-insoluble compounds of micronutrients.

The concentration and the solidification of ammonium nitrate and urea solutions to form solid fertilizers require considerable expenditure of energy and processing expense so it is attractive to use the solutions in the formulation of liquid fertilizers, without processing them into solid form. However, neither ammonium nitrate nor urea alone is sufficiently soluble at ambient temperatures to be attractive for direct use as liquid fertilizer. With either compound alone, a solution with a salting-out temperature of 32°F would contain only about 18 percent nitrogen. Fortunately, however, the joint solubility of the two compounds in water is much more favorable than this so the liquid nitrogen solutions marketed for fertilizer use almost invariably are joint solutions of ammonium nitrate and urea. Typical commercial solutions contain 28 to 32 percent nitrogen, with compositions and characteristics as shown in Table 11.2.
