In the case of ammonium nitrate fertilizer, internal conditioners are used to inhibit or modify the effects of crystal phase inveraons that result from temperature cycling during storage the inversion that occurs at 32°C, in particular, can cause untreated ammmiiim nitrate prills to Matter and cake seriously under cycling storage tem-... [Pg.491]

Expensive slow- or controlled-release fertilizers—including such low-solubility compounds as urea formaldehyde or products coated with sulfur or polymers—have been used almost exclusively on lawns and gardens and account for only a fraction of 1 % of total nitrogen applications. This should change with the wider introduction of less expensively produced nitrification inhibitors see Thomaschewski, D. 1998. Coming soon smart fertilizers. Fertilizer International 366 76. [Pg.319]

Direct Application Rock. Finely ground phosphate rock has had limited use as a direct-appHcation fertilizer for many years. There have been widely varying results. Direct appHcation of phosphate rock worldwide amounts to about 8% of total fertilizer phosphate used, primarily in the former Soviet Union, France, Brazil, Sri Lanka, Malaysia, and Indonesia. The agronomic effectiveness of an apatitic rock depends not only on the fineness of the grind but also strongly on the innate reactivity of the rock and the acidity of the sod performance is better on more acid sods. Probably more than half of the potentially productive tropical sods are acidic, some with pH as low as 3.5—4.5. Certain phosphate rocks may thus become increasingly important as fertilizer in those areas. The International Fertilizer Development Center at Muscle Shoals, Alabama is active in researching this field (30). [Pg.223]

Exxon products appear to release via a unique mechanism. Like other polymer-coated technologies, the penetration of water iato the granule is purely by diffusion. However, as water enters the particle, an osmotic pressure is created as the fertilizer is solubilized. This pressure causes an expansion of the elastomeric coating and the particle swells to many times its original diameter. As the particle swells, the coating becomes increasingly thinner to the point where it caimot contain the internal pressure and the nutrient is released. [Pg.137]

Electronics has, in fact, been a very fertile area for SEM application. The energy distribution of the SEs produced by a material in the SEM has been shown to shift linearly with the local potential of the surface. This phenomenon allows the SEM to be used in a noncontact way to measure voltages on the surfaces of semiconductor devices. This is accomplished using energy analysis of the SEs and by direedy measuring these energy shifts. The measurements can be made very rapidly so that circuit waveforms at panicular internal circuit nodes can be determined accurately. [Pg.81]
