Beginning in the early twentieth century, more and more people realized the dangerous nature of opium and its derivatives, and a worldwide effort was established to try to control the growing and selling of opium. The first attempt came in 1909 when the International Opium Commission convened for the first time. The commission was the first international congress on opium and its alkaloids. While only 13 nations attended and the actual results were minor, the meeting was significant because it put opium on the map as a worldwide problem. [Pg.67]

As now, communication between biochemists was good, but different. Because numbers were modest most biochemists in the United Kingdom knew, or had at least met, most other biochemists. (Membership of the British Biochemical Society in 1946 was 1017, in 1973, 5877, and in 1997, over 9000). Meetings were smaller with multiple sessions uncommon. It wasn t too difficult to be aware of developments outside one s own field. There were fewer journals, and many fewer specialized ones. The first International Congress of Biochemistry was in Cambridge, UK, in August, 1949. Most biochemists attended the 5th International in Moscow in 1961, and many the 7th in Tokyo in 1967. By then, there had to be parallel sessions. [Pg.276]

The fourth symposium, organized by Gulzari Malli (Simon Fraser University) and Bob Snider (University of British Columbia) was held in 1971 on UBC s beautiful campus in Vancouver. Plans for the fifth symposium in the nation s capital, Ottawa, were modified when the First International Congress of Quantum Chemistry was organized in 1973 in Menton, France. David Bishop (University of Ottawa) and Vedene Smith (Queen s University) organized the fifth symposium in Ottawa in 1974. The shift from a biennial to a triennial conference established a natural rotation between the American Conference on Theoretical Chemistry,18 the Canadian Symposium on Theoretical Chemistry, and the International Congress of Quantum Chemistry. This rotation has continued without interruption for more than two decades. [Pg.220]
