Family rank

If the family of the vectors s does not provide this subspace, i.e. the family rank is lower than the matrix defect... [Pg.97]

The efficiency ranking of desiccants in drying air is not always the same as that observed in drying other materials. Other materials may interact with the desiccants to reduce drying effectiveness. From a study of the efficiency of some 25 desiccants for drying several families of laboratory solvents and reagents it was concluded that molecular sieves are the desiccants of choice in most cases (9—17). [Pg.509]

Carnot soon realized that he did not have the temperament of a soldier and in 1818 left the army. After leaving the army Carnot took up residence in his father s former Paris apartment, and was presumably supported by his family whiile he attended classes at Sorbonne, the College de France, and the Conservatoire des Arts et Metiers. He also frequently visited factories and workshops, both to see steam engines actually in use, and to learn more about the economics of such industrial use of energy. There were rumors that he did at least on a lew occasions receive some consultant s fees for his advise, but there was no clear documentary evidence of this. In 1827 he returned to active militaiy seiwice with the rank of captain, but this lasted only a little more than a year. He resigned in 1828 and died of cholera four years later in Paris. [Pg.219]

Newcomen came from the ranks of practical tradesmen, unlike many industrial inventors who tended to be noblemen, philosophers and royal proteges. The Newcomen family had had an impressive lineage and had held its manor from the twelfth cen-tuiy until misfortune dropped them into obscurity four centuries later. Yet, a work ethic was instilled by Newcomen s grandfather, who became a merchant venturer (owning several ships), a freeholder of Dartmouth, treasurer for his town, and a staunch Parliamentarian. Elias Newcomen, the father of Thomas, was also a freeholder and a merchant of Dartmouth, trading to distant areas with a ship that he had inherited. [Pg.842]

Methyl alcohol (methanol) is the first member of the aliphatic alcohol family. It ranks among the top twenty organic chemicals consumed in the U.S. The current world demand for methanol is approximately 25.5 million tons/year (1998) and is expected to reach 30 million tons by the year 2002. The 1994 U.S. production was 10.8 billion pounds. [Pg.149]

The Ml test equipment is easy to operate, provides repeatable results, and low cost to operate. It is widely used for quality control and for distinguishing between members of a single family of plastics. Specifically, this MI makes a single-point test that provides information on resistance to flow at only a single shear rate. Because variations in branching or MWD can alter the shape of the viscosity curve, the MI may give a false ranking of plastics in terms of their shear rate resistance to flow. To overcome this problem, extrusion rates are sometimes measured for two loads, or other modifications are made. [Pg.450]

Depression is a common, serious, sometimes fatal illness that is chronic and recurrent in nature, impairs family life, reduces social adjustment, and is a burden on the community (Klerman and Weissman, 1992). This disease chronicity magnifies hoth its societal impact and its economic burden. It has been estimated that more than 17% of the disability associated with mental disorders is the result of depressive disorders (Rosenbaum and Hylan, 1999), and that the global burden of depression, measured in terms of disability-adjusted life years, will rank second only to ischaemic heart disease by the year 2020 (Murray and Lopez, 1996). [Pg.43]

The occurrence of more than one affected child in many of the families with galactosemia made it appear highly probable that this was a genetically determined disease. The mode of inheritance was worked out by the conventional methods of human genetics and, later, confirmed by biochemical studies of the families. The direct assay of enzymatic activity in heretozygotes for galactosemia must rank as one of the major contributions of biochemistry to the study of human genetics. [Pg.53]

During the next four years many additional new polymers were synthesized. Most proved of little commercial value, but the list includes three of the top-ranked popular plastic families - the polyvinyls used for phonograph records and floor tiles polyacrylics (such as Lucite) used in paints, airplane windows and buna N and buna S, two versions of synthetic rubber. Thus few households are not affected by even his early contributions. [Pg.127]

I wished I had a transcript of the family gathering last Sunday. Like the Council of Ten eight years ago, like even the Maestro and me now, the Michiels had recoiled from believing that a woman could commit such deeds herself The Michiels had closed ranks in the name of family solidarity, all except Sister Lucretzia. Today that decision had been reversed and the senior brothers had driven Jacopo out into the wilderness. [Pg.116]

The organismic sources of the metabolites are reported in the charts at the lowest possible taxonomic level (species, genus, family, order, phylum), as required by the distribution of the metabolites at issue. With terrestrial plants the tradition of giving also the family was always followed, although a broader exploration of plants, and the advent of high-sensitivity analytical systems, have rendered the family of scarce taxonomic significance. With few exceptions of highly specific metabolites, the order is the taxonomic rank most representative of the distribution of natural products. [Pg.15]
