Color and Color Separation. In 1860,James Clerk MaxweU discovered that all visible colors could be matched by appropriate combinations of three primary colors, red, green, and blue (RGB). His experiment involved mixtures of colored lights added together to produce other colors or white light. This additive color is weU represented by the primaries RGB. Indeed, human color vision is trichromatic, ie, human visual response approximates receptors for the colors recognized as red, green, and blue (see Color). [Pg.34]

Color Vision Defects. Anomalous color vision is present, eg, if one of the three sets of cones is iaoperative (dichromacy) or defective (anomalous trichromacy). This affects 2—3% of the population with males mote prone because these defects reside on the X-chromosome, with one present ia males but two ia females. Color-order systems, such as the many MunseU collections available from Macbeth, have been described previously. Essential for visual color matching is a color-matching booth. A typical one, such as the Macbeth Spectrahte, may have available a filtered 7500 K incandescent source equivalent to north-sky daylight, 2300 K incandescent illumination as horizon sunlight, a cool-white fluorescent lamp at 4150 K, and an ultraviolet lamp. By using the various illuminants, singly or in combination, the effects of metamerism and fluorescence can readily be demonstrated and measured.
