Determining the threshold value is difficult because subthreshold levels of one compound may affect the threshold levels of another. Also, the flavor quality of a compound may be different at threshold level and at suprathreshold levels. The total range of perception can be divided into units that represent the smallest additional amount that can be perceived. This amount is called just noticeable difference (JND). The whole intensity scale of odor perception covers about 25 JNDs this is similar to the number of JNDs that comprise the scale of taste intensity. Flavor thresholds for some compounds depend on the medium in which the compound is dispersed or dissolved. Preprocessing both the vendor and Pharmacia compound collections has resulted in a substantial improvement in the quality of the compounds selected and in the performance of vendors in supplying the compounds on a timely basis. In 2002, more than 83% of the nearly 60 000 compounds ordered were obtained, exceeding our earlier performances that were usually in the neighborhood of 50%. This is partially due to the preselection of vendors who had the ability to provide an appropriate amount ( 50 mg) of sample. Unfortunately, we are unable to directly compare our approach with those tried by others or with an entirely random sampling approach. Nevertheless, it is clear that the compoimd acquisition process described here does, indeed, provide an effective means for enriching our corporate compound collection. [Pg.329]

Since toxicity is a necessary but not sufficient quality of a rodenticide, the next phase of the testing was conducted to determine the acceptability of the treated diet to rats and mice. The test consisted of twenty rats per treatment level with at least twenty control animals. The tests were run from three to ten days, with the feed consumption data and necropsy data recorded for each animal.
