The factor extraction according to Eq. (8.20) in the course of which the number of common factors are estimated by rank analysis and coefficients of the factors (factor loadings) are calculated.

The first step of FA is factor extraction the methods described below are the most commonly used. The extraction methods calculate a set of orthogonal factors (or components) that in combination reproduce the matrix of correlation. The criteria used to generate the factors are not homogeneous for all methods but the differences between their solutions may be quite small.

In the search for the paper factor, extracts from several gymnosperms were assayed on P. apterus fifth instars (Table 1) [83, 84, 85]. Extracts of wood and bark of a number of these conifers were also injected into pupae of the wax moth, Galleria mellonella a localized scaleless patch was observed in the pupal cuticle at the site of injection with these extracts. However, no abnormal effects on development were observed [86]. The authors speculated that this absence of activity may be attributable to the dilute concentration of active ingredients in the extracts. 

R-mode factor analyses using both the varimax and biquartimin solutions were carried out on the same data used for the Q-mode. In the varimax analysis, the communalities were all greater than 0.8, indicating that most of the variance of each component is explained by the seven factors extracted. These seven factors were subjected to the oblique biquartimin solution, and the loadings of the variables on the factors are illustrated in Figure 6.2. 

Due to the large number of samples in which Fe and Cr were below detection limits it was not possible to include them in the general R-mode analysis. However, a smaller suite of 20 crude oils was selected in which V, Fe, Ni, Co, Mn and Cr were all found at concentrations above detection limits. A separate R-mode analysis was run on these 20 samples and the results of the biquartimin solution are shown in Figure 6.3. The four factors extracted account for nearly 95% of the total variance among the variables. The correlation coefficient between Fe and Co in 38 crude oils in which both elements were above detection limits was 0.42, and the correlation coefficient between Fe and Mn in 36 crude oils in which both elements were above detection limits was 0.18. From these various facts we can state, with some confidence, that Fe is unrelated to either Co or Mn in...
