Engagement research

From the time that mitochondria were first seen in cells, they have been an interesting enigma. The more we learn about them, the more questions are raised. There would seem to be enough unanswered questions in the field of mitochondrial function, genetics, and origins to engage researchers for a long time to come. 

The period after the new corporate guidelines for office design were introduced and imposed contained somewhat low enthusiasm, more cynicism towards change and less of the wanted behaviour of creativity and participation, typical consequences of lack of positive reinforcement. Likewise the researchers perception of the work was influenced. A potent positive reinforcement for the engaged researcher initially would be to experience participation, development and enthusiasm from the employees. When this stopped we as researchers for some time increased in our efforts to restore and continue the process that had been so rewarding, before eventually partly withdrawing from the OD project, somewhat exhausted.

The book is not a new edition of the Chemistry of Organic Fluorine Compounds but an update of the 1976 edition with literature coverage from 1972 to 1991 The structure of the original book has been preserved, and it is assumed that its users are familiar with the 1976 edition, which was reprinted by Ellis Horwood in 1992 and to which numerous references are made The book will be useful especially to organic fluorine chemists engaged in laboratory research... 

Interest in the chemistry of water-soluble polymers (polyelectrolytes) has been continually increasing during the past 45 years. The tremendous scope of utility for water-soluble polymers has led to a vigorous search for new materials and the rapid development of polyelectrolytes into a dynamic field of industrial research. Growth in this field has been especially rapid since 1960 and today, many companies are engaged in synthesis and applications research on polyelectrolytes that are primarily used in four main marketing areas water treatment, paper, textiles, and oil recovery [1]. Polyacrylamide gel was also used as soil conditioner [2-4].

The chapters have been written by industrial and academic research workers from many countries, all actively engaged in the relevant areas, and we are exceedingly grateful for the arduous efforts that have made this treatise possible. They have our most sincere thanks and appreciation. 

The first reports of the observation of transient emission and enhanced absorption signals in the H-n.m.r. spectra of solutions in which radical reactions were taking place appeared in 1967. The importance of the phenomenon, named Chemically Induced Dynamic Nuclear Spin Polarization (CIDNP), in radical chemistry was quickly recognized. Since that time, an explosive growth in the number of publications on the subject has occurred and CIDNP has been detected in H, C, N, and P as well as H-n.m.r. spectra. Nevertheless, the number of groups engaged in research in this area is comparatively small. This may be a consequence of the apparent complexity of the subject. It is the purpose of this review to describe in a quahtative way the origin of CIDNP and to survey the published applications of the phenomenon in... 

The guest editor is very happy and thankful that well-known experts who are actively engaged in research in these fields have agreed to contribute to the volumes. It is hoped that this collection of reviews is not only valuable to investigators in the respective fields but also to many chemists who are not so familiar with electrochemistry.
