Eye ointments are prepared in a semi-sohd base (e.g. Simple Eye Ointment BP, which consists of yellow soft paraffin, eight parts hqnid paraffin, one part wool fat, one part). The base is filtered when molten to remove particles and sterilized at 160°C for 2 hours. The drug is incorporated prior to sterilization if heat stable, or added aseptically to the sterile base. Finally, the prodnct is aseptically packed in clear sterile alumirtinm or plastic tnbes. Since the prodnct contains virtnally no water, the danger of bacteria proliferating in the ointment is neghgible. Therefore, there is no recommended maximum period during which they can be nsed. [Pg.418]

Blepharitis is a topical inflammation of the eyelid margins that should be treated using topical antibacterial agents. Gentamicin eye ointment is preferred to the fusidic acid drops since the ointment is a better formulation to be used where the condition involves the eyelid margins. Chloramphenicol eye drops is the third option since it is an antibiotic with a wider spectrum of activity. A combination of corticosteroid and antibiotic is not recommended because of the side-effects associated with the steroid. The use of oral tablets is not usually recommended since blepharitis can easily be managed with topical drops. The use of dexamethasone eye drops, monotherapy steroid, could clear the inflammation but mask persistence of infection. [Pg.341]

Ointments are semi-solid greasy preparation for local application to the skin, rectum and mucous membrane also. The ointment base is usually anhydrous and contain the medicaments in solution or suspension. Ointments are used for its soothing, astringent, antiseptic and other selected actions e.g. Chloromycetin eye ointment. [Pg.14]

Books and birth classes can fill you in on exactly how much say you really have in this process. It can be jarring how much this education can feel like preparing for a battle with your health care providers, but these are battles you will never regret. When reading up on a topic—from postdelivery eye ointment to epidurals and the question of whether they can cross your placenta—try to find the actual studies, rather than summaries of them. Too often reporters and writers quoting studies have their own agendas. You may be surprised how different the raw facts are from an article based on the raw facts. [Pg.160]
