Tingling sensation

Aconitine produces an intense tingling sensation when a drop of a solution, 1 in 10,000, is applied to the tip of the tongue. It also gives a characteristic unstable, crystalline precipitate when a few drops of potassium permanganate solution are added to a solution of the alkaloid in dilute acetic acid. The formation of acetic acid when the alkaloid is heated dry, or of benzoic acid when it is hydrolysed by alkali, have also been suggested as identification tests. For the recognition of minute quantities a biological test is probably the best procedure. ... [Pg.675]

Amprenavir (APV, Agenerase) is the most recently approved HIV protease inhibitor. It is smaller and stereochemically less complex than the other drugs in this class. Adsorption of this compound was found to be impaired by high fat meals. Common side effects of Amprenavir are nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, rash and a tingling sensation around the mouth. [Pg.1287]

Do not swallow or chew sublingual or transmucosal tablets allow them to dissolve slowly. The tablet may cause a burning or tingling in the oral cavity. Absence of this effect does not indicate a decrease in potency. Older adults are less likely to report a burning or tingling sensation on administration. [Pg.388]

Paralytic shellfish poison, like botulinum toxin, is a neurotoxic substance and can also affect certain muscles, including the heart, which are under nervous system control. Some poisoned humans who have recovered from the effects of PSP have described the early stages of intoxication as not at all unpleasant a tingling sensation in the lips and face and a feeling of calm. Those who die from PSP ingestion do so because of respiratory failure. [Pg.96]

The hallmark of diabetes is inappropriately high blood glucose concentrations. Too much blood glucose is linked to the sequelae of diabetes. These include blindness (retinopathy), kidney failure (nephropathy), pain and tingling sensations (neuropathy), and amputations (small vessel damage). [Pg.215]

Aciclovir is an antiviral indicated in the treatment and prophylaxis of cold sores. It is available for systemic administration (tablets) or topical use (cream, eye ointment). In the management of cold sores, the cream is applied every 4 hours and continued for 5 days. Its use should be started as soon as symptoms (tingling sensation) begin. [Pg.290]

Mild eye irritation with lacrimation and other transient symptoms of mucous membrane irritation have been observed in some persons at concentrations of 0.1-0.3 ppm. For most people, however, a tingling sensation in the eyes, nose, and posterior pharynx is not experienced until 2-3 ppm. Some tolerance occurs, so that repeated 8-hour exposures at this level are possible. At 4-5 ppm irritation of mucous membranes increases and lacrimation becomes evident. This level may be tolerated by some for short periods, but after 30 minutes discomfort becomes quite pronounced. [Pg.348]

Instruct the patient to place the lozenge in the mouth and allow it to slowly dissolve (about 20 to 30 minutes). Minimize swallowing. Advise the patient not to chew or swallow the lozenge. The patient may feel a warm or tingling sensation. Advise the patient to occasionally move the lozenge from one side of the mouth to the other until completely dissolved. [Pg.1331]

The purple coneflower Echinacea purpura, and its close relatives, E. angustifolia and E. pallida, are the source of the herb Echinacea, which is widely popular as a nonspecific immune stimulant. These perennials are native to the prairies of North America and are now widely grown garden ornamentals. The root and aerial parts of the plant are the portions used, and the preparation s potency can be verified by the transient tingling sensation produced when it is tasted. Echinacea contains alkamides, caffeic acid esters (echinacoside, cichoric acid, caftaric acid), polysaccharides (heteroxylan), and an essential oil. Some echinacea products are standardized for their echinacoside content. In the past, adulteration with American feverfew (Parthenium integri-folium) was common. Echinacea is now sold either by itself or in combination with golden seal or zinc for the treatment of colds and influenza. [Pg.787]

Chew gum slowly until burning or tingling sensation is felt, then park gum between cheek and gum until tingling sensation goes away... [Pg.867]

Headache (possibly severe, occurs mostly in early therapy, diminishes rapidly in intensity and usually disappears during continued treatment), transient flushing of face and neck, dizziness (especially if patient is standing immobile or is in a warm environment), weakness, orthostatic hypotension Sublingual. Burning, tingling sensation at oral point of dissolution Ointment-. Erythema, pruritus Occasional GI upset... [Pg.877]

Occurrence.— If red ants be made to pass over blue litmus paper and be at the same time irritated, they leaveared streak behind them, produced by the formic acid which they qect. By placing the hand on an ant hill, a tingling sensation is felt from the same cause, and the hand acquires the powerful and pleasant odour of formic acid. [Pg.304]

Qiang Huo and Du Huo are commonly used to expel wind, dampness and cold from the body and to treat Bi syndrome. They are often used together to treat pain, heaviness, stiffness, tingling sensations and numbness of the affected regions of the body. [Pg.337]

Xi Xian Cao is pungent, bitter and cold, and enters the liver and Kidney meridians. It enters the deep regions of the body, the tendons and the bones. It searches out and expels wind, dampness and heat. It is selected when a Bi syndrome is at the active stage and the joints are swollen and painful with a burning sensation. Moreover, it can eliminate wind-dampness and treat heaviness and numbness of the limbs. Because it enters the Liver and Kidney meridians, Xi Xian Cao is especially effective in treating weakness and stiffness of the knees and back, pain of the bones, numbness and a tingling sensation of the limbs. [Pg.339]

The classical niacin deficiency disease is pellagra, which is characterized by symptoms including diarrhoea, dermatitis, dementia and eventually death. High-protein diets are rarely deficient in niacin since, in addition to the preformed vitamin, such diets supply sufficient tryptophan to meet dietary requirements. Large doses of niacin can cause the dilation of capillaries, resulting in a painful tingling sensation. [Pg.199]

A 76-year-old woman taking lisinopril 20 mg/day and metoprolol for hypertension developed headaches, nausea, and a tingling sensation in her arms. Her serum sodium was 109 mmol/1, with a serum osmolality of 225 mosm/kg, urine osmolality of 414 mosm/kg, and urine sodium of 122 mmol/1. She had taken diclofenac 75 mg/day for arthritic pain for 6 years and naproxen for about 1 month. Propoxyphene napsylate and paracetamol had then been substituted and zolpidem had been started. A diagnosis of SIADH was postulated and thyroid and adrenal causes were excluded. Lisinopril was withdrawn and fluid was restricted to 100 ml/day. The serum sodium gradually corrected to 143 mmol/1. [Pg.615]

Chronic effects of arsenic poisoning include neurotoxic effects to the central and peripheral nervous systems. Symptoms include sensory changes, muscle sensitivity, prickling and tingling sensations (paresthesia), and muscle weakness. Liver injury is a common symptom of chronic arsenic poisoning. Studies of victims of chronic arsenic poisoning from contaminated drinking... [Pg.240]
