Books and birth classes can fill you in on exactly how much say you really have in this process. It can be jarring how much this education can feel like preparing for a battle with your health care providers, but these are battles you will never regret. When reading up on a topic—from postdelivery eye ointment to epidurals and the question of whether they can cross your placenta—try to find the actual studies, rather than summaries of them. Too often reporters and writers quoting studies have their own agendas. You may be surprised how different the raw facts are from an article based on the raw facts. 

Birthing classes should empower you with knowledge—about the birth process and about yourself. You need to take the time to return to your instincts and inner self and realize that for the most part you already have what you need to bring to this labor and birth. Childbirth classes should helpyou see your inherent pain-coping abilities and reframe them within a context of labor and birth— What will I do contraction after contraction The classes should also help you crystallize your desires for the birth experience and create a simple birth plan that expresses your preferences. They should ultimately allow you to make the best decisions possible in whatever circumstances that may arise.
